Following an exhilarating victory against James Madison Wednesday, the No. 14 Virginia women’s lacrosse team visited Durham, N.C. to battle No. 8 Duke Saturday afternoon. Despite holding the lead after 50 minutes, the Cavaliers fell 16-11 and are still seeking their first ACC win this season.
Virginia (4-6, 0-3 ACC) seemed poised to pull an upset against Duke (7-3, 2-1 ACC) for much of the day. The two teams traded goals throughout the game, with neither team gaining a lead larger than two goals before the last two minutes. However, after a goal with 10:02 remaining put the Cavaliers up 11-10, the Blue Devils went on a 6-0 run — including scoring goals 10 seconds apart on two occasions — to finish the game.
Just three days after successfully completing all 14 clears, the Cavaliers struggled in this area against the Blue Devils, converting just 12 of 20 attempts. Also contributing to the Virginia loss were 29 fouls called against the Cavaliers — 10 more than Duke. Virginia scored just one goal on their five free position attempts.
Senior attacker Liza Blue notched her third straight hat-trick, leading Virginia with four goals. Senior midfielder Maddy Keeshan and junior attacker Casey Bocklet each netted two goals, while junior attacker Courtney Swan added two of Virginia’s three assists. Senior goalkeeper Liz Colgan made nine saves — her most since making 22 against North Carolina March 8.
Virginia held Duke in check in the first half — allowing only five goals — but surrendered 11 goals in the second half. The Blue Devils had four players with hat-tricks and six players who scored three or more points.
Next up for Virginia is a game against Old Dominion Wednesday night in Klöckner Stadium.
