Cavaliers tabbed fourth at ACC Media Day

Brogdon named to five-player All-ACC team by media members

Media members picked the Virginia men’s basketball team to finish fourth in the ACC in a preseason poll conducted Wednesday at ACC Operation Basketball, the conference’s annual media day, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The press also named Virginia junior guard Malcolm Brogdon to the 2014-15 preseason All-ACC team.

A year removed from capturing the ACC’s regular-season and conference-tournament titles, the Cavaliers — who said goodbye to stars Joe Harris and Akil Mitchell this offseason — garnered seven of a possible 65 first-place votes for an 824-point total that comfortably eclipsed Syracuse’s fifth-place total of 702.

Duke received 41 first-place votes for a 935-point total that easily topped the poll. North Carolina and conference-newcomer Louisville came in behind the Blue Devils at 870 and 847 points, respectively.

Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Florida State, North Carolina State and Miami rounded out the top 10, while Clemson, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Boston College and Virginia Tech occupied the poll’s bottom third.

North Carolina junior guard Marcus Paige, Louisville junior forward Montrezl Harrell, Duke freshman center Jahlil Okafor and Notre Dame senior guard Jerian Grant joined Brogdon as preseason all-conference selections.

The left-handed, sweet-shooting Paige earned Preseason ACC Player of the Year honors, while Okafor — a 6-foot-11-inch center out of Whitney Young Magnet High School in Chicago, Illinois — bagged the Preseason ACC Rookie of the Year award.

Brogdon started all 37 games for Virginia last year while averaging 12.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. He paced the Cavaliers with 44 steals, sank 87.5 percent of his free throws and raised his game across the board in conference play, where he led Virginia with 14.8 points per game.

The Cavaliers open the 2014-15 season Nov. 14 at James Madison. They will come home to play Norfolk State Nov. 16, in their first game at John Paul Jones Arena since a 75-56 upset of then-No. 4 Syracuse last March 1.
