No. 4 women's soccer dominates NC State

Virginia scores six in blanking of Wolfpack

The third-ranked Virginia Cavaliers impressed fans this weekend in their matchup with NC State as they tallied six goals in their second consecutive ACC game for the first time since 2008.

After losing 1-0 to Florida State on Sept. 28, Virginia (13-1, 5-1 ACC) has come back with a vengeance, easily dispatching ACC foes Notre Dame, Boston College, and finally, this Sunday, NC State (2-10-2, 0-6 ACC). Their matchup with the Wolfpack was the final game of Virginia’s two-game home stand and the Cavaliers treated the 1,741 fans in attendance at Klöckner Stadium to quite the show.

The Cavaliers had 17 first half shots but didn’t convert until the 27th minute, when junior forward Kaili Torres found fellow junior Brittany Ratcliffe on a cross for her seventh goal of the season. This was just the first instance of Torres’ outstanding play, as she scored just three minutes later and assisted on two more of the Cavaliers’ goals that day.

Virginia carried a 2-0 lead into the break, but truly asserted its offensive prowess in the second half, scoring four times in 21 minutes.

Junior forward Makenzy Doniak curled in her ninth goal of the season in the 49th minute. Just five minutes later, senior forward Danielle Colaprico, who was named the ACC player of the week, knocked in a cross from freshman defender Olivia Hazelrigg to stretch Virginia’s lead to four.

Then, in the 65th minute, the Cavaliers did something that they have never done before.

Sophomore defender Meghan Cox headed in a cross from Colaprico for the defense’s 10th goal of the year, a school record. Just five minutes later, Virginia finished its scoring for the day as Ratcliffe doubled her tally when Doniak and Torres combined to find her in front of an empty net.

Sunday’s dominant performance proved record-setting for Virginia. Doniak’s goal and assist pushed her across the 100-point mark for her career — she is just the sixth Cavalier to achieve such a feat. Colaprico’s two assists pushed her total to 11 for the year, a record for fourth-years, and her 36 career assists ties her for second on the program’s all time list.

After a week off, the Cavaliers will begin a three-game road trip at Louisville in the first ever meeting between the schools and the team’s first trip to Kentucky.
