The official results did not look particularly encouraging for the Virginia swimming and diving teams after the three-day Ohio State Invitational: the women finished last of seven teams with 104 points, while the men settled for second-to-last, scoring 103.
But since the Cavaliers only sent their divers on the weekend, the takeaways were generally positive — largely thanks to impressive individual performances.
On Friday, junior Becca Corbett was the only member of the women’s team to qualify for the finals on the 3-meter springboards, where she placed third with a score of 310.50. Meanwhile, the men sent two divers — senior JB Kolod and junior Carl Buergler — to the 1-meter finals. Kolod claimed fourth while Buergler snagged ninth with scores of 359.25 and 307.85, respectively.
The same names appeared for the Cavaliers in Saturday’s respective finals events. Corbett finished eighth on the 1-meter boards with a score of 270.70, while Kolod and Buergler snared sixth and eighth place with scores of 371.60 and 342.30.
On Sunday, Virginia qualified three divers — Corbett, Kolod and junior Colby Shinholser — for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in March.
Kolod and Shinholser punched their tickets by placing sixth and eighth with scores of 327.05 and 305.75, respectively, in the platform finals. Corbett’s score of 229.60 was good enough for eighth in the women’s platform event.
Both Virginia’s swimmers and divers will next compete Dec. 5-7 at the Georgia Fall Invitational in Athens, Georgia.
