Imovbioh, women's basketball go 1-1 at Florida International Tournament

Cavaliers fall to Toledo, dominate host FIU

The Virginia women’s basketball team split a pair of games in the Florida International Tournament Thanksgiving weekend, losing in the last five seconds against Toledo Friday before coming back with a double-digit win against host Florida International Sunday.

With less than 10 seconds left in the game, Toledo senior guard Inma Zanoguera dribbled the ball down the court, sidestepped her defender — Virginia sophomore guard Breyana Mason — and hit her fourth three-point shot of the night, giving Toledo a 64-62 lead.

With five seconds left in the game, Virginia freshman guard Mikayla Venson — who prior to Zanoguera’s shot hit a jumper to give Virginia a 62-61 lead — attempted a three-point shot of her own, but it bounced off the rim to give Toledo the win. Zanoguera finished with 24 points and 10 assists to lead the Rockets, while junior guard Faith Randolph added 21 points for the Cavaliers.

Virginia led 33-27 at halftime, but only made 10 of 30 shots in the second half and allowed Toledo to make 50 percent of its shots after the break.

In the consolation game against FIU, the Cavaliers led consistently on the way to a 74-61 win, improving to a 5-1 record.

In the game, the Cavaliers were out-rebounded 36-21 but were able to force 25 Panther turnovers — turning those turnovers into 31 points. Fourteen of the turnovers came from steals — with five coming from both senior center Sarah Imovbioh and Venson, both career-highs.

Imovbioh and Randolph both put up 16 points to pace the Cavaliers, who shot 51.6 percent from the field. The senior also grabbed 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season while Randolph was rewarded for her efforts in both games by being named to the All-Tournament team.

The Cavaliers return to the court Wednesday to face Illinois on the road in the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
