Malcolm Brogdon was in double figures for the 41st time in his Virginia career Thursday night. The junior guard shot 4-9 from the field and 8-9 from the line, finishing with 16 points.

The Virginia men’s basketball team dispatched Cleveland State by a 70-54 final score Thursday night at John Paul Jones Arena, resuming its winning ways following an 11-day break for exams.

The No. 6 Cavaliers improved to 10-0 for the first time since 2000-01 while extending their home-court winning streak to 16 games, the eight-longest active streak in the country.

Vikings leading scorer and junior guard Trey Lewis scored the first bucket of the game, busting inside for a lay-in off the glass.

33 seconds later and a minute into the game, Virginia junior forward Anthony Gill deposited an easy two points off an assist from junior center Mike Tobey.

Junior guard Malcolm Brogdon converted a pair of free throws for a 4-2 edge at the 18:03 mark of the first half, and the Cavaliers held the lead to the final horn.

Cleveland State junior forward Anton Grady scored inside 16 minutes 34 seconds before the break to halve Virginia’s 6-2 lead.

The Cavaliers then reeled off 10 unanswered points while holding Cleveland State (5-6) scoreless for just more than 10 minutes.

Juniors forward Vinny Zollo and guard Kaza Keane ended the drought with back-to-back 3-pointers, bringing the Vikings within six at 16-10 with 5:53 to go in the period.

After Brogdon and Gill combined for nine points in an 11-2 Virginia run, the teams traded points, with Virginia taking a 31-18 edge into halftime.

The Cavalier lead swung between 11 and 15 points in the first three minutes of the second half and bloomed to 20 when junior guard Justin Anderson hit a 3-pointer with 14:42 to play.

Cleveland State battled back to 49-36 with a 10-3 run capped by senior forward Marlin Mason’s lay-up with 12:11 remaining.

Anderson answered with a three-point play, and Virginia more than matched Mason’s next four points with a 3-pointer from junior forward Evan Nolte and a Brogdon dunk.

Cleveland State got no closer than 15 the rest of the way.

Brogdon and Anderson led Virginia offensively with 16 points each. Gill scored 13 and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

Lewis paced Cleveland State with 18 points on 7-13 shooting, including 4-9 from 3-point range.

The Cavaliers get back in action Sunday, when Harvard (7-1) visits for 12 p.m. tip.
