Volleyball splits regular season finale

Virginia finishes No. 6 in the ACC

The Virginia volleyball team ended its 2014 campaign this past weekend with a 3-0 loss to Syracuse after a midweek 3-0 win against Boston College. The Cavaliers (17-14, 10-8 ACC) landed a second-straight winning season, earning them a sixth place finish in the ACC — exactly where preseason polls projected Virginia would end up.

In their penultimate game against Boston College Wednesday, the Cavaliers notched their best offensive performance of the season with a 25-13, 25-20, 25-18 win against the Golden Eagles.

In the match, the Cavaliers hit 41 kills with only two hitting errors. Virginia hit .473 while holding Boston College to only an .147 hitting percentage — lower than the Cavaliers’ season average of .249 per game, an ACC worst in defensive hitting percentage.

The Cavaliers were led by junior middle hitter Natalie Bausback and sophomore outside hitter Haley Kole, who recorded 11 kills each.

The team did not fare as well against Syracuse, however — losing 22-25, 21-25, and 24-26 in Friday night’s season finale. The Cavaliers were outhit .323-.248 by the Orange and only had one block against Syracuse’s nine.

In the first set, the Cavaliers allowed Syracuse to score seven straight points to take a 7-2 lead. The Cavaliers battled back to save four set points but could not overtake the Orange.

In the second set, the Cavaliers scored six straight points to momentarily take the lead, but Syracuse closed out the set by winning five of the last six points. Virginia fought again in the third set by saving three set points, but it was too late for redemption.

Bausback once again led the Cavaliers by hitting 15 kills on .619 hitting to finish the season with 136 more kills than her sophomore campaign. She also hit .368 on the season — the highest single-season mark in school history — and lead the team in blocks, contributing to 119 of the team’s 253 total blocks.

With 12 kills on the game, senior Tori Janowski ended her career with a total of 1,202 kills, landing her at No. 10 on the all-time kills list. Janowski also leads the team in service aces for the second straight season.
