Roscoe Roberts appointed new University general counsel

Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring appointed Roscoe C. Roberts as legal counsel to the University. Announced Friday, Roberts will succeed Paul Forch, who served as University general counsel from 1996 until his retirement in August. Roberts has worked as the legal counsel for Virginia State University since 2003, and will join the University community in October.

City to construct fence along train tracks

During the summer, the City of Charlottesville announced its plan to construct a fence on the western side of railroad tracks between 14th Street and Rugby Road. The fence was commissioned in 2010 when the City was granted federal funding and was to be completed by the end of the summer, but has since been delayed.

New Cabell renovations complete

After four years of construction, the renovations to New Cabell Hall are nearing completion as students and departments file into the six-story building at the start of the semester. The $64.5 million renovation added state-of-the-art equipment and updated many of the building’s systems.

Largest class yet joins student body

The Class of 2018 officially joined the University community with Sunday’s convocation ceremony, during which a record 3,690 first years were welcomed to Grounds. The incoming class is not only large, but also diverse, according to the Office of Admissions, with new students displaying a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.

July 1 passes, faculty pay increase delayed

President Teresa Sullivan recently wrote to the entire University community concerning several cuts in the Virginia appropriation for the University. The final state budget adds $8.2 million less than planned to the University’s budget.
