Men's basketball visits NC State

The No. 2 Virginia men’s basketball looks to continue its two-game winning streak Wednesday when it travels to Raleigh, North Carolina to take on the NC State Wolfpack. The game will be Virginia’s first since Jan. 25 against an unranked opponent.

Brogdon played 38 minutes and led Virginia with 15 points. He made two free throws with 10 seconds to play, icing the game.

Rising to the competition

As the ESPN showcase at John Paul Jones Arena became more of a defensive clinic than an evenhanded dual during the first half Saturday night, it was easy to forget that the opposition is a top-10 program.

Men’s basketball hosts Louisville

Virginia’s next front-court challenge comes Saturday night, when defensive-minded Louisville rolls into town. The No. 8 Cardinals (19-3, 7-2 ACC) feature a potent backcourt combination in guards senior Chris Jones and sophomore Terry Rozier as well as one of the best big men in college basketball, junior forward Montrezl Harrell.

Margins of calamity

This past weekend in sports was one of the worst for me in a long time. The Virginia basketball team lost in a heartbreaker to Duke, and the New England Patriots — my least favorite team in football — won its fourth Super Bowl in 13 years. As much as I was angered by the outcomes of these two games, the manner in which those outcomes came about made it that much worse.

Men’s basketball pushes past No. 13 North Carolina, 75-64

Just 48 hours after coming up short at home against No. 4 Duke, the Virginia men’s basketball team defeated North Carolina 75-64 Monday night at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The No. 3 Cavaliers (20-1, 8-1 ACC) trailed by a point at halftime but steadily pulled away in the last 14 minutes to improve to 8-0 on the road in 2014-15.

Bennett revives national title hopes

It’s in every news story with each addiot Virginia men’s basketball team win: “The unbeaten Cavaliers are off to their best start since the 1980-81 season when they started 23-0.” Let me do the math for you: 1981 was 34 years ago.

Junior guard Malcolm Brogdon scored 14 points in Wednesday night's win against the Wolfpack. He also helped quiet NC State sharpshooter Ralston Turner after halftime.

Virginia downs NC State, 61-51

Virginia (14-0, 2-0 ACC) posted a 61-51 win to extend the program’s best start since 1980-81, when the Cavaliers—led by three-time Naismith College Player of the Year Ralph Sampson—won their first 23 games.

Cavaliers survive ACC opener against Miami

The No. 3 Virginia men’s basketball team survived its first scare of the season in its ACC opener against the Miami Hurricanes (10-4, 0-1 ACC). Struggling at the line came back to haunt the Cavaliers, who blew an 18 point halftime lead and were forced to play two overtimes to overcome the Hurricanes. Virginia (13-0, 1-0 ACC) shot under 70% from the line which allowed Miami to claw its way back into the game.

Weekend Previews: Dec. 5-7

The Skinny: The Cavaliers are 8-0 for the first time since 2003 largely thanks to their stifling defense, which currently ranks No. 1 nationally in scoring. Their most recent triumph came Wednesday, 76-65, at the expense of former ACC foe Maryland, who scored 13 points less than their season average against Virginia.
