Although you wouldn't know it from the weather, it's summer, which means vacation time. For those of you who plan to travel, you may want to be aware of some of the potential dangers hidden behind those innocuous, fun-filled trips abroad.

Alumni donations decline

Alumni donations to universities, specifically those from younger alumni, have dropped in the past few years, according to a report released last week by Blackbaud, Inc., an organization which provides information and services to non-profit groups.

State revenue commissions rise 7.6 percent

Gov. Bob McDonnell Monday announced state revenue commissions rose 7.6 percent in March from February's revenue report, according to a press statement released by the governor's office, which added that sales and income tax receipts can explain the increase. "Sales tax receipts increased by 11.1 percent in the month," according to Monday's press release.

City hosts race dialogue

The Dialogue on Race Steering Committee and the University and Community Action for Racial Equity (UCARE) hosted an event Saturday afternoon to discuss race-based issues and incidents in Charlottesville. The Dialogue on Race is a City committee which promotes on-going discussions about race, ethnicity, racism and diversity to identify solutions for any community problems, according to the committee's website. Saturday's event was designed to further these goals by creating "a space for discussion on these topics that challenge how we communicate with each other as a community," according to the website.

Center honors Ella Baker

The Women's Center presented the Ella Baker Social Justice Award to Queer and Allied Activism Friday afternoon at its second annual Ella Baker symposium. Baker was a black civil rights activist who died in 1986.

Groups protest alleged murder

The University's chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Black Student Alliance held a rally yesterday evening on the north side of the Rotunda to commemorate the death of Trayvon Martin.

Panel talks critical incidents

Former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese III moderated a panel discussion in the Dome Room of the Rotunda Sunday, in which scholars discussed the response to emergency situations.

Va. earns failing grade

Virginia received a failing grade on a Corruption Risk assessment report card released Monday by the Center for Public Integrity, Public Radio International and the nonprofit group Global Integrity.

Transfer rates increase

A study released earlier this week by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center titled "Transfer and Mobility: A National View of Pre-Degree Student Movement in Postsecondary Institutions" reported increased transfer rates within institutions of higher education. The report, which was published in partnership with Indiana University's Project on Academic Success, examined the transfer patterns of more than 2.8 million full- and part-time students from 2006 to 2011.
