Standouts hit world stage

Following a disappointing 3-0 shutout loss against Michigan State Saturday, the Virginia field hockey team received positive news Tuesday as it was announced that senior midfielders Paige Selenski and Michelle Vittese would participate in the upcoming Pan American Games for Team USA.

The qualifier tournament, which will be held Oct. 19-29 in Guadalajara City, Mexico, features the world's top talents who are eying a spot to compete in the 2012 Olympics to be held in London. The top 16 qualifying teams at next month's event will earn the opportunity to represent their countries on the world stage next summer.

Selenski and Vittese, who ranked as two of the Cavaliers' top-four scorers during 2010, are currently redshirting this season because of their commitment to play internationally and are expected to return to the squad during the 2012 campaign.
