Noname will perform at the University for the University Programs Council Spring Concert, according to a Facebook post made by the organization Tuesday afternoon. The concert is slated for March 15 at 8 p.m. and will take place in the Student Activities Building.
“we are BEYOND thrilled to announce that our 2018 spring concert artist is ... NONAME!!!” the post said.
Noname, or Fatimah Nyeema Warner, is an American rapper and poet whose success, though impressive, is still relatively new. She first gained popularity with features on several tracks from Chance the Rapper’s mixtapes “Acid Rap” and “Coloring Book,” in 2013 and 2016, respectively. Her first full-length mixtape “Telefone,” released later in 2016, further solidified Noname as a leading female hip-hop artist. She is known for her unusual, spoken-word style and thought-provoking lyrics.
UPC’s most recent concert was D.R.A.M. and Cherub in September 2017, a free event hosted in the Amphitheatre. The concert followed the cancellation of Future and Lil Yachty’s Welcome Week Concert, which was cancelled in response to the events of Aug. 11 and 12, as the artists expressed “concerns with safety” about visiting Charlottesville in the wake of the white nationalist rallies.
UPC was unable to find a replacement act for Welcome Week, despite multiple social media efforts to encourage Chance the Rapper to come to the University and perform. After a short period of searching, UPC announced they “were unable to move forward with an artist that … would meet the needs and expectations of our community.” The D.R.A.M. and Cherub concert took place about a month after this announcement.
No accompanying acts have been announced, and ticket prices are still unknown. While the D.R.A.M. and Cherub concert was free of charge, UPC has received criticism for not offering free tickets for the Future and Lil Yachty concert. Free Welcome Week concert tickets had been offered in the past, with acts like J. Cole and Smallpools.
The organization’s Facebook post states that “more info on ticketing” will be released soon, but no further dates are provided.
