Virginia squash competed at the Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference Championships over the weekend, with the men’s team winning the regional tournament and the women’s team becoming the regional runner-up.
Both the No. 8 men’s team (17-4) and the No. 10 women’s team (14-6) will now await their seeding in the CSA Team National Championships, which will start at the end of this month in Boston.
The men’s team began the tournament with a sweep against No. 24 Dickinson (5-12) Friday. Freshman Peter Miller opened the tournament with a point for the Cavaliers, winning 11-4, 11-3, 11-4 in position five.
Notable performances also came from freshman Cullen Little, freshman Teddy Durfee and senior Harrison Capp, who all recorded at least one 11-0 match during the game. The match marked the second time this season the Virginia men beat Dickinson as the Cavaliers also trounced the Red Devils last month, 8-1.
The men’s team went on to defeat No. 12 George Washington (9-9) Saturday to earn a spot in the championship. Three freshman captured perfect 3-0 wins during the match, including Omar El Torkey, Aly Hussein and Durfee.
Sunday, the men’s team took down No. 14 Franklin & Marshall (10-6) to win the Mid-Atlantic Squash Championship and the Holley Cup for the second straight year. Additionally, Virginia finished the conference tournament undefeated yet again after winning all four championship games last season.
The 8-1 victory marked an improvement from the Cavaliers’ opening season match against Franklin & Marshall, when Virginia won 6-3. The victory almost certainly ensures them a first-ever berth in the A division at team nationals.
Similar to the men’s team, the women’s team also started the tournament Friday with a sweep. Virginia cruised past No. 18 Franklin & Marshall (8-7) in its opening match of the weekend. The Cavaliers won eight of their nine positions 3-0, with a notable win from junior Giovanna Veiga de Almeida, who won two of her three matches 11-0.
The women’s team then proceeded to defeat No. 14 George Washington (5-14) and No. 23 Dickinson (4-11) Saturday to advance to the championships. Freshman Sydney Maxwell, junior Emily Woodwroth and freshman Julia Curran recorded wins in both matches, and the Cavaliers swept five individual matches in their meeting with George Washington.
The women’s team ultimately fell 7-2 to No. 8 Drexel (11-6) Sunday, exiting the tournament as the Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference runner-up. The two Cavaliers who recorded wins against the Dragons were senior Julia Thompson in position six and senior Sarah Doss in position nine.
Virginia squash now awaits seeding for the three-day national championship tournament in Boston, which is set to begin at the end of February.
