Men’s tennis extends win streak to five with pair of weekend victories

The Cavaliers knocked off Liberty and Virginia Wesleyan in a Saturday doubleheader

Virginia returned to action over the weekend looking to build off the momentum it gained from its three-match win last weekend. The Cavaliers (10-4, 2-1 ACC) were able to do just that, knocking off in-state opponents Liberty and Virginia Wesleyan in a doubleheader Saturday.

Virginia opened the doubleheader by taking on Liberty Saturday morning at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center. The Flames (8-4, 0-0 Atlantic Sun) entered the match on a three-game winning streak as they looked to down their in-state rival.

In the doubles point, Virginia fell behind after the pairing of junior Gianni Ross and sophomore William Woodall dropped their match. However, the Cavaliers were able to win the point after the teams of sophomore Ryan Goetz and junior Matthew Lord and freshman RJ Fresen and junior Spencer Bozsik rallied and won their respective matches.

The singles matches were tightly contested. Bozsik dropped his match, allowing Liberty to even the match at one point apiece. However, No. 121 Goetz and Ross each recorded straight-set victories to give the Cavaliers a 3-1 advantage.

The Cavaliers then needed just one more win on one of the three remaining courts to seal the victory. Although Fresen lost in straight sets to cut Liberty’s deficit to 3-2, Woodall earned the picked up a hard-fought three-set victory over Flames freshman Goncalo Ferreira, sealing the victory for Virginia.

With the win, Woodall improved to 9-1 on the season in singles matches. To end the morning, Lord lost his singles match in three sets and the final score read 4-3 in favor of the Cavaliers.

Later in the day, Virginia went indoors to take on Division III Virginia Wesleyan at Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Marlins (1-3, 1-0 ODAC) played earlier in the day, recording an 8-1 victory over Emory & Henry.

As expected, the Cavaliers cruised, earning a 7-0 victory over the Marlins. Virginia easily won the doubles point, as all three pairings recorded victories. Notably, the duo of Bozsik and junior Ethan Moszkowski recorded a dominant 6-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan’s team of senior Andreas Combos and junior Anthony Wilson.

It was an impressive showing in the singles portion of the match for the Cavaliers, as all six players recorded straight-set victories. Goetz did not drop a single game in his match, earning a 6-0, 6-0 victory over senior Nick Gunther. Fresen, Moszkowski, Bozsik, Lord and junior Jerome Romualdez also tallied victories for the Cavaliers.

Virginia returns to action this week, looking to improve upon its five-match winning streak with another pair of games against in-state opponents. The Cavaliers will host William & Mary Wednesday afternoon at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center, before traveling to Blacksburg, Va. to face rival Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon.
