The Virginia men’s golf team finished in a three-way tie for first place at the Hamptons Intercollegiate at Maidstone Golf Club in East Hampton, N.Y. The Cavaliers finished with a combined team score of 4-under to tie with Georgia Tech and Northwestern.
The first round proved tough for the Cavaliers, as they finished with a 7-over 295 with no players finishing under par. Virginia was four shots off the lead going into the second round but pulled it together to shoot a 3-under 285 to pull the lead back to one. In the final round, the Cavaliers were 8-under as a team to split the team title, highlighted by sophomore Chris Fosdick’s 4-under 68. No player shot over par.
Fosdick was the star of the tournament, earning his first collegiate win of his career at a 7-under 209 . He edged out Georgia Tech Junior Ross Steelman, who finished with a 6-under 66, by one stroke. He started his tournament with a 2-over 74 but was able to fire a 4-under 68 in the second round to give him a one-shot lead going into Tuesday’s final round. In the final round, Fosdick, after bogeying three of the first six holes, birdied in eight of his final 12 holes, helping him secure the victory.
Fosdick’s final round 67 was enough to match his career low round while competing at Virginia. His 209 was also a career low in a 54-hole in his time as a Cavalier.
Fosdick is the first individual title winner for Virginia men’s golf since 2018 when Thomas Walsh won the Inverness Intercollegiate.
Virginia had multiple other sharp individual performances, with junior Pietro Bovari and freshman Deven Patel tying for 10th at 2-over 218. Bovari was the scoring leader for Virginia in the spring 2021 season, so he will look to build on this strong first performance.
In his first tournament since the shortened 2020 season, senior Sam Jung finished 3-over for the tournament and tied for 14th. Sophomore George Duangmanee went 5-over on his three rounds, finishing in 25th for the tournament. The final Cavalier to play in the tournament was senior Jack Montague, who competed as an individual, coming in 38th.
Overall, the Cavaliers finished with a combined score of 860 among their five players to tie Georgia Tech and Northwestern. The key to Virginia’s success at Maidstone Golf Club was the consistency of its five players. The only other team to have all five players place in the top 25 of the tournament was Georgia Tech.
The Hamptons Intercollegiate was the first of three events that the Cavaliers will participate in this fall. Virginia will look to continue its strong start to the fall season in two weeks when it plays at the Golf Club of Georgia Invitational in Alpharetta, Ga., hosted by Georgia Tech Oct. 22-24.
