The Cavalier women had yet another outstanding performance, garnering 12 first-place finishes.

The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated Army in a successful dual meet this past weekend at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Charlottesville. The women’s team improved to 2-0 on the dual season with a 181-89 win, while the men’s team got its first win of the season, finishing with a score of 186-94.

“I was really impressed,” Coach Todd DeSorbo said. “We had a lot of people step up in events they don’t typically swim, which was really nice. We wanted to show off their versatility and see what they are capable of. I think it is a good stepping stone into next weekend [against Texas], which will be a big competition for us.”

The swimming events began Saturday morning at 10 a.m. The women’s team opened with the 200-yard medley relay where sophomore Alex Walsh, freshman Emma Weyant, sophomore Abby Harter and freshman Reilly Tiltmann won the event with a combined time of 1:41.95.

The team also had several individual wins on the day. Alex Walsh won the sprint freestyle events — the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle — and junior Kate Douglass swept the breaststroke events. Freshman Gretchen Walsh won the 200-meter freestyle event, junior Lexi Cuomo won the 100-meter backstroke event, Harter won the 200-meter fly event, Weyant won the 200-meter backstroke event and junior Ella Collins won the 500-meter freestyle event.

The women’s swimming team overall picked up 12 first-place finishes in the win, and Gretchen Walsh swam a Virginia pool record time of 52.18 in the 100-yard butterfly.

For the men’s team, Virginia’s relay group of juniors Max Edwards, August Lamb, Josh Fong and Konnar Klinksiek won the 200-yard medley relay with a combined time of 1:29.12. Sophomore William Cole and senior Justin Grender both finished with two individual wins. Cole won in the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke, while Grender won in the 100-meter and 200-meter butterfly. Overall, the men’s swimming team picked up 10 first-place finishes.

On Friday, freshman Elizabeth Kaye swept the three-meter event for the women’s diving team with a score of 288.98 and the one-meter diving event with a score of 285.45. Junior Charlotte Bowen placed second for both events, and sophomore Maddy Grosz took third in both events. Sophomore Oliver Mills won the one-meter event for the men’s side with a score of 304.95.

Virginia will face Texas at home on Friday and Saturday. The two-day dual meet should be a real test for Virginia against the No. 1 men’s swim team and No. 5 women’s swim team in the country.
