The Cavalier women have a chance to add another marquee victory in their title defense effort.

The Virginia men’s and women’s swim and dive teams will host a pair of highly ranked Texas squads for an important two-day dual meet Friday and Saturday at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Charlottesville.

The No. 1 Cavalier women are ranked atop the CSCAA poll again this season after winning an ACC Championship and the program’s first national championship last season.

In their last meet, the Virginia women took down Army 181-89 in an impressive showing. The Cavaliers secured the top three spots in five different events — the 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard breaststroke.

Virginia’s returning Olympians — sophomore Alex Walsh and junior Kate Douglass — continued their dominance as each won two individual events in the meet. Freshman Gretchen Walsh, who swam at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials, also impressed against Army. Her time of 52.18 in the 100-yard butterfly set a Virginia pool record.

The No. 5 Longhorn women will be a good test for Virginia. In their most recent meet, the Texas women convincingly beat No. 21 Texas A&M 180-112.

The Longhorns are led on the boards by freshman Hailey Hernandez. After being the youngest competitor in the women's three-meter springboard competition at the Tokyo Olympics this past summer, Hernandez promptly claimed the Texas three-meter program record in her collegiate debut before sweeping both diving events against Texas A&M.

As for the No. 9 Virginia men’s team, No. 1 Texas will be a big early-season challenge.

The Longhorn men have won six national championships since 2010 and have dominated again to start this season, securing lopsided wins in their first two meets over Incarnate Word and No. 16 Texas A&M.

Some of the key contributors for the Texas men’s team include graduate student diver Jordan Windle and senior swimmer Drew Kibler who competed for Team U.S.A. at the Olympics in Tokyo. Junior swimmer Caspar Corbeau has also had an impressive start to the season after qualifying for the Dutch Olympic team this past summer — Corbeau was originally identified as a reserve breaststroke for medley relays.

The Cavalier men fell short in their season-opening match at No. 2 California but responded nicely with a 186-94 win against Army.

The men’s 200-yard medley relay team has gotten off to an especially strong start. The Cavaliers have come out on top in the event in both of their first two meets with times of 1:25.88 and 1:29.12, respectively.

The meet gets underway Friday with diving beginning at 1 p.m. and swimming following at 4 p.m. The action continues Saturday at 10 a.m. with all coverage available to stream on ACC Network Extra.
