Initial updates did not include explicit information about the internet outage.

UPDATE: Two emergency maintenance periods will be performed on eduroam following the Monday morning power outage. The first will occur Monday 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and is not expected to result in any downtime of on-Grounds wifi. The second will occur Tuesday 10:00 to 11:00 p.m. and is expected to result in roughly 20 minutes of downtime of on-Grounds wifi.

Information technology systems including NetBadge, Collab, phone access to U.Va. Health as well as eduroam — the on-Grounds wifi system — were down this morning following a major power outage which affected University data centers. Per a University-wide alert sent at 5:26 a.m., power was restored, but a handful of other services including Collab are still down.

The University will operate normally despite the outages, including holding online and in-person classes as normal.

Initial emails to students did not explicitly mention that wifi services were down — students reported outages in most areas on Grounds, and an eventual update sent before 10 a.m. noted that internet might be “spotty or inoperative” in some areas. Full access to internet and the return of NetBadge came at 11:46 a.m.

Many students posted online about the wifi outage as they were unable to access online academic resources and other student services while preparing for final exams. Many professors host class materials and assignments on Collab.

Fourth-year College student Julia Tongate said she was surprised classes weren’t canceled.

“A lot of students and professors use laptops and wifi during class,” Tongate said. “This is just an added stress during finals.”

Some students reported extensions on deadlines and papers following the outage.

Per the alerts, the University is continuing to address the issues and will post updates online.
