It’s been a tough year for mainstream rap music. For the first six months of the year, the only rappers making certifiable hits were Drake, Iggy Azalea and whoever could afford a DJ Mustard beat. The genre’s old guard — Jay Z, Kanye West, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne — has mostly kept quiet.
