They say that at the moment of death, your whole life flashes before your eyes. And while I've never been close enough to death to verify this assessment, I do feel as if a little bit of life slipped from my grasp this weekend. Two weeks and three days ago, between the hours of 6:30 and 9:49 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, I lost 30 minutes of my life. I am still reeling from the experience.

The most exciting thing that I did during Winter Break was successfully operate the Xerox Document Center at The Roanoke Times newspaper in Roanoke.

Like so many other students, I awoke Monday morning reeling from the paradox of Thanksgiving Break: after five days at home, I need a vacation from my vacation.

A quick glance through any recent fashion magazine reveals that Americans have an obsession with the senses.

Some people are known for being good athletes. Some people are known for their acting ability. Some people write poetry, juggle or bake prize-winning cakes. I, on the other hand, am talented in none of those regards. My only defining attribute, I'm afraid, is my hair.

After visiting friends at several universities during the past few weeks, I now realize why the University is so highly regarded. It's not because we have the highest cumulative GPAs, the best professors or the richest history. And it's not because we accept fewer students or have better sports teams. As far as I can tell, the University is better than most other schools in America for one reason and one reason alone. We, the students of this fine institution, are hardcore.

Until this year, I always assumed that road rage was confined to those who actually drive. I now realize this assumption is incorrect. Though I don't own a vehicle, I must confess to harboring more rage while on certain roads than most people who own cars.

The corner of my green Jansport bookbag is split open at the seam, exposing its contents -- unprotected from the outside world. My bookbag has been ripped for about a year now, and much to the dismay of my mother, I haven't gotten around to fixing it.

The way I see it, the only major difference between me and Harris is that he knows who Pokemon is, and I don't. Harris has brown, curly hair just like me, and like me, he spent Sunday morning coloring and baking sugar cookies with a bunch of 5-year-olds. Though I was the teacher and he was a student, we were both exhausted after a long day of kindergarten religious school.

My phone number is 923-3620. If you need to reach me, that's the number to call. Don't waste your time dialing 923-3271. Due to a high degree of ineptitude and inflexibility on the part of a certain local carrier, that number rings busy all day. I repeat: my working number is 923-3620.

I need a car.

There are those who argue that a liberal arts degree is worthless. Those "in the know" will often declare that a B.A. from the University will leave me no more job-ready than a common correspondence school graduate.

It was the damnedest thing that I have ever seen. Let me repeat that. It was THE DAMNEDEST thing that I have ever seen. In fact, I don't believe a better phrase exists to describe what I just saw.

Picture it: July 31, 1999, Alltel Pavilion in Raleigh, N.C. The air is hot and sticky from a day's rain and it's the worst heat wave in years. The deep purple sky is flecked with a few stars fighting to break through the stubborn clouds.

It's 3 p.m. Friday. I meet Steve Cooper, a third-year College student, at the Bank of America on the Corner. He's dressed to impress in a fitted, gray, Armani Exchange shirt and Abercrombie cargo pants. Patterned socks to match, leading into his Adam Derrick shiny black shoes.

As I embark on my second year of college, I must pause to reflect on the changes in my life since I first applied to the University.
