“Saturday Night Live” began its 45th season with a bang, despite pre-season controversy over racist remarks made by former new cast member Shane Gillis. Gillis’s hiring and subsequent firing was left in the rearview window in the premiere, which featured Woody Harrelson as a host for his fourth time and first-time musical guest Billie Eilish.

“I really tried to center the production around the idea ... of spelling bee magic,” director Dave Dalton said of the drama department’s latest production, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” A musical comedy that invites audience participation, the play follows six quirky students on their journey through the most cutthroat competition in town. During their pursuit of first prize, the children reveal the trials and tribulations associated with being the best, all while balancing their own personal complications.

Avid fans of improv comedy and viewers of The CW Television Network that stick around past 9 p.m. on Monday nights are likely familiar with the antics of Wayne Brady, Colin Mochrie, Ryan Stiles and a rotating fourth player on “Whose Line Is It Anyway?,” a revival of the 1990s comedy television show “where everything’s made up and the points don’t matter.” Mochrie was accompanied by fellow comedian Brad Sherwood at the Paramount Theater on April 13 for the duo’s “Scared Scriptless” Tour, a headlining event at this year’s Tom Tom Festival.

No Christmas watch party is complete without some iteration of the Grinch, Dr. Seuss’ beloved furry cynic. Whether an adamant purist that finds only the original TV special to be a worthwhile watch or a parent that derives some sick satisfaction seeing Jim Carrey strike the fear of God into their children, all viewers eagerly anticipate the fictional character’s cardiomegaly each December. Illumination Entertainment jumped the gun in 2018 and released a new version of the story in early November, boasting an all-star cast including Benedict Cumberbatch and Angela Lansbury. Although “The Grinch” is sure to delight modern youth, it wastes acclaimed actors in a paltry rendition of a holiday classic.

ABC’s Golden Globe-nominated sitcom “Black-ish” got off to a slow start this week in its season premiere, making audiences wonder whether the socially-aware series is beginning to hit the slump experienced by veteran comedies like “Modern Family” and “The Big Bang Theory.” Yet, hallmarks of the show — including the skillful intertwining of modern family humor with honest conversations about race — remind viewers that “Black-ish” remains ABC’s freshest comedy to date.

As the 2018-19 film awards season approaches, viewers will have a big question in mind — how will Damien Chazelle, director of Academy Award-nominated films “Whiplash” and “La La Land,” fare this winter? The filmmaker recently made news when critics denounced his most recent project, “First Man,” for omitting the planting of the American flag on lunar terrain, a move President Donald Trump described as “[embarrassment] at the achievement coming from America.”

Since Sony Pictures first set its release date, audiences have been eagerly anticipating the release of “Venom,” hoping it would provide the advantages of a film related to Spider-Man but not actually featuring him — mainly, not having to witness Uncle Ben’s death yet again. As the first official installment in Sony’s own Marvel Universe, “Venom” had big shoes to fill, but ultimately, it gets two “tongues” down for being more cluttered than creepy.
