The men's basketball team dropped its second consecutive ACC road game last night, falling to Boston College, 70-67. Virginia was able to overcome a 13-point deficit late in the first half and close the gap to six at halftime. The Cavaliers (10-8, 1-3 ACC) took the lead with 7:47 left in the second half but were unable to maintain it, eventually losing to the Eagles (14-5, 4-1 ACC).

Junior midfielder Paige Selenski of the Virginia field hockey team and senior midfielder Sinead Farrelly of the Virginia women's soccer team were both named semifinalists for their respective player of the year awards.

Senior running back Keith Payne and junior cornerback Chase Minnifield have been named to the All-ACC football team. Minnifield earned a first-team selection, while Payne garnered second-team honors. These were the first career honors for both players.

How do you think Virginia will do this season after your departure and being picked to finish 10th in the conference?\nVirginia has an awesome coaching staff that pushes the players to their highest level every day. This is what will keep Virginia at an elite level, and with high-caliber players on the roster like they have now, they will continue to compete at the highest level of the ACC, without a doubt. The team already knows what they need to do. All I would tell them is to continue to believe in themselves and the sky is always the limit for them.

The No. 19 Cavaliers finished fifth at the U.S Collegiate Championships in Alpharetta, Ga. yesterday, ending the three-day tournament and their fall season. Virginia has finished in the top five in three out of their four tournaments this fall.

The 2010 NCAA Champion Virginia women's rowing team competed at the Head of the Charles last weekend, turning in a solid performance. The regatta for the Cavaliers was the first of the fall season as well as their first competition since claiming the national crown in May.

The No. 25 men's golf team won its second consecutive tournament of the 2010 season, topping the leaderboard at The Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. Fellow ACC foes Wake Forest, North Carolina and Virginia Tech all finished in the top 10. The Cavaliers posted a 10-under 278 to finish four shots ahead of second-place Kent State. Freshman Ben Rusch led Virginia with a second-place finish, compiling a 6-under 210, including a stellar final round 3-under 69. Senior Amory Davis recorded his second consecutive top-10 finish, placing 10th with a 3-under 213, while sophomore Ben Kohles finished 24th with a 3-over 219. The Cavaliers will conclude their fall season at the U.S. Collegiate Oct. 24-25.

The No. 20 Virginia men's golf team opened its season in impressive fashion, finishing 10th at the Ping-Golfweek Fall Preview. Junior Ben Kohles led the Cavaliers with a sixth-place finish, notching his 10th top-10 finish at Virginia. Kohles finished 4-over on a course that will host the NCAA Championships next spring. Freshman Ben Rusch, who shot a 14-over, was Virginia's second-highest finisher, landing in 38th place. The Cavaliers will now head to Tampa, Fla., for the Gary Koch Invitational, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

The No. 20 Virginia men's golf team will open its season this Sunday at The Fall Preview in Stillwater, Okla. Junior Ben Kohles, 2010 ACC Co-Player of the Year, leads the team into the season as one of the top 30 players to watch in the country, according to Golfweek. Last season, the Cavaliers finished 11th at the NCAA Championships with Kohles earning 51st place for honorable mention All-American honors.

Several former Cavaliers now playing in the NFL enjoyed offensive success this past weekend. Texans quarterback Matt Schaub led Houston to a 30-27 victory in overtime against the Washington Redskins. Schaub went 38-52 for 497 yards with three touchdowns. The Cavalier great was drafted in the third round by Atlanta before being traded to Houston in 2007.

Virginia athletes earned several individual accolades this weekend. Both the women's soccer team's senior midfielder Sinead Farrelly and field hockey sophomore forward Tara Puffenberger were named ACC Players of the Week for their performances. In addition, Puffenberger went on to be named National Player of the Week by womensfieldhockey.com. This marks the second consecutive week a Virginia field hockey player has been named conference player of the week, with junior midfielder Paige Selenski having won the honor last week. Puffenberger scored four goals this weekend, leading the No. 3 Cavaliers to wins against No. 9 Syracuse and No. 12 Ohio State. Against the Buckeyes, Puffenberger notched her first career hat trick in the 4-2 victory. Farrelly followed suit, scoring three goals in Virginia's wins against Texas and Boston University en route to winning the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic and subsequently being named MVP. Both the field hockey and women's soccer team are undefeated thus far and will continue non-conference play this weekend.\n

What did you think of Al Groh getting fired?\nIt was a tough situation for him. After the past few years, coach and I have become close. We still keep in touch to this day. I talked to him after that, but at some point you have to move on and go somewhere else. It worked out for coach. He is in a good situation and a good spot. Bringing in coach London, from my days [at Virginia] was a good hire. He is a guy who knows the area recruiting-wise and is a great motivator. I think it will be a good situation.

Following the departure of Jeff Jones, Sylven Landesberg and Tristan Spurlock, coach Tony Bennett has been working to ensure his first recruiting class is able to fill some big shoes, with guard Billy Baron as the most recent athlete to commit to play for the Cavaliers. Baron played for Worcester Academy in Massachusetts this past season, averaging 27.5 points, 6.2 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game. He picked Virginia instead of Rhode Island, where his father is currently the head coach. Baron joins K.T. Harrell, Joe Harris, James Johnson, Akil Mitchell, and Will Regan in a class that currently ranks 15th in the country, according to Rivals.com.
