It seems blood drive vans are always parked outside Clark Library or the Chemistry Building. Students sit in the vans for a few minutes, brave a quick needle prick and are on their way to saving a life. But would people be more inclined to give blood if there were a financial incentive? What if donors could receive money for selling other body parts such as organs or bone marrow?

This November, many students will be voting for the first time ever. Among the issues still being debated is the Affordable Care Act. The act, passed in March 2010 and upheld by the Supreme Court this summer, has wide implications for college-aged citizens like us.

September is almost over, and finally we can pull out our boots, sweaters and scarves because fall — and with it, fall break — is right around the corner! As autumn descends upon Charlottesville bringing cooler temperatures, brightly-colored leaves and increased stress levels, we can’t afford to preoccupy ourselves with DayQuil and tissue boxes. Yes, flu season is rapidly approaching, and to help students and community members prepare, the flu vaccine will be available around Charlottesville later this month.

“A recent study has shown eating egg yolks can be as bad for your heart as smoking,” claimed a satellite radio announcer this summer, interrupting [my favorite?] collaboration of Maroon 5 and Flo-Rida. Educated in part from organic chemistry lab, as well as from my own compulsive nutrition blog reading, I was outraged by the simplistic and blatantly under-informed urgency of the “health” advisory announcement.
