Seven years of French classes were not as useful as Claire Constant — a graduate student defender on the Virginia women’s soccer team — had expected when she landed in Costa Rica for training camp with the Haitian women's national team.

Last year, I wrote in an early-season column predicting that the Virginia women’s soccer team would win the 2021 national championship. However, Coach Steve Swanson’s squad prematurely fell to BYU by a single goal in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. This year, I am doubling down on my claim from last year. Despite several key departures, what remains is reason to be optimistic for what lies ahead, and if the remaining Cavaliers can smoothly step into bigger roles, Virginia can win the program’s elusive first national championship.

When Kate Bollinger opened for Faye Webster at The Jefferson Theater March 3, it was her first time returning to Charlottesville on a real tour. It was something of a homecoming for Bollinger — she had performed at The Jefferson Theater on a one-off occasion, opening for the Charlottesville-based Kendall Street Company in 2019, but she had not performed in the area since.

I was towards the front of the crowd at the UPC Welcome Week Concert featuring Jack Harlow. It was there that I was in a truly packed crowd for the first time. Multiple times, there were massive sways in the crowd when one student would push and start a domino effect of other students falling over. Those at the front were especially vulnerable. People wanting to get closer to Harlow pushed students forward, causing those at the very front to be pushed into the fence. This crowd, though seemingly hectic, was not too large and mostly well-behaved. The concert finished without a blip but provides a local perspective, admittedly on a much smaller scale, of what transpired in Houston, Texas on Nov. 5.

When Magdalena Bay announced their tour accompanying George Clanton in May 2021, I eagerly scanned the dates hoping for at least something in Washington, D.C. Surprisingly, I saw Charlottesville on the tour list. This was the first tour announcement I had seen in over a year, and I quickly purchased tickets. As eager as I was for the tour, Magdalena Bay was likely more so. Due to the pandemic which saw venues shuttered and tours canceled, Matthew Lewin and Mica Tenenbaum, the duo who compose the pop outfit, were dealt a serious blow. Both of their 2020 upcoming tours were canceled.

Virginia women's soccer’s 2020-21 campaign saw them earn a College Cup berth for the first time since 2014 and fourth time in team history. The appearance offered Virginia a golden chance at a second national championship appearance following the heartbreak of years past.

Baby Keem, or Hykeem Jamaal Carter, Jr., had big shoes to fill. Aside from the pressure of a debut studio album — which generated serious buzz and placed Las Vegas on the map for reasons other than gambling — Baby Keem has some interesting “family ties.”

Virginia is a basketball school, evidenced by championship wins and consistent push of talent into pros. Every year since 2014, the Cavaliers have had someone from the men’s basketball team sign to an NBA team, while the women’s basketball team claims WNBA All-Star and Hall of Famer Dawn Staley and 2020 WNBA Draft first-round pick Jocelyn Willoughby as alumni. What many may not know is that the Cavaliers also bridge international waters — most recently, in the Olympics.

If you are not familiar with Pi’erre Bourne yet, you should be. If not, there is probably a good reason. Bourne, formally known as Jordan Timothy Jenks, is considered a producer before a rapper.

America’s favorite boy band is back — but not for long. BROCKHAMPTON kicks off their farewell from music with their sixth studio album, “ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE.” This is to be their penultimate album, according to BROCKHAMPTON frontman Kevin Abstract who tweeted, “2 brockhampton albums in 2021 — these will be our last.” The boy band has made similar claims in the past — “SATURATION III” was announced to be “the last studio album by BROCKHAMPTON,” but then they proceeded to release two more before their most recent.

The Virginia men’s basketball program does not retire jerseys often. In fact, it does not occur in the NCAA much in general. Comparable programs — Duke, UNC and Kentucky have retired 4, 1 and 0 player jersey numbers this century, respectively. Two players have had their jerseys retired this century by the team — Malcolm Brogdon and Sean Singletary. Given the rarity of such an event, perhaps my postulation is abrupt. Still, humor me this. De’Andre Hunter, Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome — surely at least one of them deserves a retired number, right?

After the men’s basketball team’s first round exit this past Saturday, there are probably a million hypothetical situations flooding fans’ minds. What if the players had not been sidelined right before the tournament? What if Virginia had shot better than 26 percent from beyond the arc? Yet, what if the most consequential hypothetical had nothing to do with scheme or shot making? What if, in some alternate universe, the Cavaliers’ success depended on a mere hairstyle?
