The crowd at New Cabell Hall erupted into applause and loud cheers as masks were pulled off third-year College student Garrison Ambrose and his line brothers, revealing the new inductees of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Alpha Phi Alpha was the first historically black fraternity this spring to celebrate its new members in a neophyte presentation last week.

Recyclemania is a nationwide campaign organized by Keep America Beautiful — a non-profit organization working to ensure that communities are environmentally and economically sustainable. To raise awareness about the campaign, University Sustainability organized a “Game Day Challenge” on Saturday at the men’s basketball game against Virginia Tech.

It was a quiet Monday night on the Corner as fourth-year Architecture student Emily Heymann and third-year Commerce student Mike McConnell met each other for the first time. As they walked to dinner, both students were hesitant about what was to follow — asking each other a set of 36 questions which are particularly intimate for a first date.

From the moment she arrived at the University, first-year College student Attiya Latif knew she wanted to promote diversity, tolerance and acceptance of students of all backgrounds. On Sunday Latif channeled these interests towards establishing World Hijab Day on Grounds — an occasion where students could don the hijab for a day and engage in open dialogue regarding cultural tolerance.

Three weeks after arriving at the University of Colorado at Boulder in Sept. 2004, Lynn Gordon "Gordie" Bailey Jr. died of an alcohol overdose. Today, the Gordie Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, together with the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team, are working as part of a nationwide effort to educate students about alcohol safety on Grounds.

Peter and Manelle Martino joined the Charlottesville community this summer with the opening of their seventh Capital Teas location in the Stonefield Plaza. The pair started its tea business in 2007 in Annapolis, Maryland and have since expanded throughout Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Ashley Self was a junior in high school when her mother was diagnosed with brain cancer, beginning a battle with the disease which eventually claimed her life. Now a third-year nursing student, Self participates in Relay for Life to create a positive change in light of this tragedy.

During the summer of 2001, Maria Diaz was a promising student getting ready to begin her second year at the University. But on August 24, in a tragic accident, her car suddenly veered off the side of the road. She died instantly.
