After emerging onto the world stage of pop music with their chart-topping self-titled debut album in 2013, the 1975 have since grown to take on more mature and ambitious projects. Frontman Matty Healy has directed the band away from their earlier, youthful emo-pop expressions towards more mature postmodern social statements through projects like 2018’s “A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships'' and 2020’s “Notes on a Conditional Form.” However, “Being Funny in a Foreign Language” — released Oct. 14th — struggles to effectively commit to a single direction for the band in 2022.

The Virginia men’s soccer team defeated VCU 3-1 Tuesday night at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers (3-5-1, 0-3-0 ACC) scored three goals in the second half to knock off the Rams (5-3-1, 1-1-0 Atlantic 10) and snap a three-match losing streak.

The Virginia men’s soccer team fell to James Madison 1-0 on Sept. 21 night in Harrisonburg. The game was scoreless for over 100 minutes, before the Dukes (6-2-0, 2-0-0 CAA) finally broke through in double overtime to hand the Cavaliers (2-4-1, 0-2-0 ACC) their second consecutive double overtime loss to an in-state rival. A few days later, Virginia fell victim to another late rally — this time by North Carolina who scored twice in the last 12 minutes of play.

The Virginia men’s soccer team lost to No. 17 Virginia Tech on Friday night in Blacksburg. It was a hard-fought game, but the Hokies (3-1-2, 1-1-0 ACC) edged the Cavaliers (2-3-1, 0-2-0 ACC) 2-1 in double overtime.

The Virginia men’s soccer team fell 3-1 to Syracuse Friday night at Klöckner Stadium. The Orange (3-2-0, 1-0-0 ACC) scored two quick goals in the first half, and the Cavaliers (2-2-1, 0-1-0 ACC) were unable to rally. Days later, on Tuesday night, Virginia faced off against UNC Greensboro (3-2-1, 0-0 SoCon) at Klöckner Stadium. After 90 minutes of play and two overtime periods, neither team was able to get on the board and the game ended in a 0-0 tie.

The 2020-2021 season was a challenging year for the Virginia men’s soccer team. With the losses of stars such as Daryl Dike, Henry Kessler and Joe Bell to the professional ranks, the Cavaliers were always expected to take a step back after nearly winning the national championship in 2019.

The No. 12 women’s lacrosse team will wrap up its regular season with a match against rival Virginia Tech this Saturday. The Cavaliers (8-6, 3-6 ACC) lost four consecutive games, including a pair of big defeats to top-ranked North Carolina this past weekend. Virginia will hope to use this game as a confidence booster before the ACC and NCAA Tournaments begin in the coming weeks.

The No. 8 Virginia women’s lacrosse team fell to No. 10 Boston College by a score of 20-11 Saturday afternoon at Newton Campus Lacrosse and Soccer Field in Newton, Mass. It was the first loss of the year for the Cavaliers (5-1, 2-1 ACC), who won five consecutive games to open the season.

The Virginia wrestling team finished in fourth place at the ACC Championship in Raleigh, N.C. Sunday afternoon. The Cavaliers had 10 wrestlers compete, and six of them earned bids to the NCAA Championship.

The Cavaliers (3-3, 2-3 ACC) were unable to carry over the momentum they had gained from their previous two wins as the Tar Heels (5-2, 3-2 ACC) proved to be too strong and downed Virginia 25-9.
