In 1949, Dr. Luther Porter Jackson, a history professor at Virginia State and a scholar of African American Studies, delivered a paper called “Virginia and Civil Rights.” He was one of the first black scholars to present a paper at a conference at the University, and was also one of the early advocates for black voting rights and for black students in higher education institutions. When the Black Student Alliance called for the creation of an office of minority affairs in 1975, two of the three buildings in Dawson’s Row were named after him.

“How are you doing this week?” was the standard question third-year Kinesiology student Carley McQuain heard when she attended weekly sessions at the University’s Center for Counseling and Psychological Services. McQuain began attending CAPS sessions when she was diagnosed with an eating disorder during her first year at the University. After a semester of treatment — an exception to CAPS’ typical six-session limit — McQuain ultimately sought outside help for her condition.

The question of whether students and faculty should be able to carry guns on college campuses has been asked across the nation in the past year. In February 2015, lawmakers in 10 states proposed bills allowing students to carry firearms for protection purposes. In December 2015, two Republicans in the Virginia General Assembly proposed House Bill 79, which would allow concealed carry by full-time faculty at institutes of higher education. This bill was referred to the House’s Committee on Education, and it is still under review.

The Virginia General Assembly passed four bills March 8 to codifiy recommendations from Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s Task Force on Combating Campus Sexual Violence. The task force created 21 recommendations to reform the way Virginia prevents and responds to sexual violence on college campuses.
