ALTHOUGH this may seem like a faux pas for a graduation issue dedicated to reliving wonderful memories and experiences at the University, I cannot help but look back to my first year in Charlottesville and remember how much I wanted to transfer. That's right, as graduation is now upon us, I have to remember how I spent the better part of my first year silently plotting and planning ways to escape from the University of Virginia.

When celebrated restaurant critic Phyllis Richman stepped down from her position at The Washington Post in May - after giving over 20 years of culinary advice to eager Washingtonians - the scramble began to fill the shoes and the costumes of that culinary celebrity. That's right: costumes, or disguises, rather. In fact, during her tenure, Richman developed quite a reputation for being unknown, wearing subtle disguises so that no one in the restaurant world really knew exactly what she looked like.

With businesses thriving around the Downtown Mall and West Main Street areas, including wine shops, popular art galleries and bookstores announcing new exhibits and weekly readings, Charlottesville definitely has the beginnings of a more cosmopolitan culture. And although the city is still far from urban, the style, service and sophistication of the Metropolitain restaurant will leave any patron feeling like they have entered one of the better dining establishments of a major East Coast city.

When searching through historic downtown Charlottesville for fine dining establishments, one might accidentally disregard the C&O Restaurant because of its simple and bland exterior. But this would be a regrettable mistake.
