For many students, a lack of transportation that fits around their schedule might have entirely prohibited their ability to vote Tuesday. For the second year in a row, Student Council partnered with University Parking and Transportation and CAR2Vote — a local, independent, nonpartisan service — to provide transportation to student who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to vote.

Amidst all the festivities and celebrations at Friday’s Bicentennial launch event, numerous volunteers stood diligently at their posts near various waste stations across the Lawn. Each of these waste stations were complete with bins for compost, recyclables and other trash and served as part of the Office for Sustainability’s “Zero Waste” initiative, which seeks to reduce the University's environmental footprint by reducing the amount of trash sent to landfills.

Although Charlottesville is a small city of approximately 46,000, it — along with the immediate surrounding area — has been the initial home for over 3,500 refugees, all of whom had to navigate an intricate system to remake their lives here. Since the International Rescue Committee opened its Charlottesville office in 1998, they have been one piece of the system, helping refugees from 32 different countries make a new home in Charlottesville.

A man attending the white nationalist “Unite the Right” on Aug. 12 was captured on video aiming his firearm at counter protesters before firing his weapon into the ground, putting it back into his holster and walking away.

Three people are dead and numerous others are injured after the “Unite The Right” rally Saturday. The day was anticipated to be tense, but turned violent as the rally drew hundreds of white nationalists and counter-demonstrators to downtown Charlottesville.

Stephen Dalton Baril, 20, a former University student and Richmond native, is currently awaiting trial for the Feb. 1 sexual assault of another University student. Baril has been charged with both sodomy by force, threat or intimidation and rape by force, threat or intimidation.

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation named third-year College student Attiya Latif as one of the 62 Truman Scholars for 2017. There was a total of 768 students nominated for the scholarship from a record 315 colleges and universities.

Members of the community and University administration met March 16 for a ceremony honoring the 100th anniversary of the death of former University student James Rogers McConnell. McConnell, who spent two years in the College of Arts and Sciences and one year in the Law School, died in combat as a pilot for France during World War I.

The March Board of Visitors meeting concluded Friday afternoon with a meeting of the full Board, which included presentations by University President Teresa Sullivan, outgoing student Board member Phoebe Willis and the Faculty Senate Chair Margaret Riley. The approval of a new project for the Strategic Investment Fund was also on the agenda.
