After a period of inactivity, second-year College student Marwa Hamidi has led the Afghan Student Association to its University comeback this year. The association hosted its first speaker Thursday night, drawing a wide spectrum of students on Grounds.

The idea started a year ago, when second-year College student Joanna Spotswood went to a networking lunch. She started a friendship with the girl randomly seated next to her, and the two started a year-long project that culminated Thursday in the Corner Indie Fest.

Every year, nearly four months after the ball drops in New York City, another New Year celebration occurs. To help to ring in the Iranian New Year, referred to as “Nowruz” in Persian, the University’s Persian Cultural Society holds Iran Day to commemorate the spring equinox holiday — which fell this year on March 20, at 12:57 p.m. The festivities are complete with Iranian dances, poetry and music.

The Latino Student Alliance welcomes all students to celebrate Latino culture — including those who do not identify with the group. The LSA hopes by making clear there are no barriers to involvement, they can break down the perception that racial, ethnic and cultural groups divide the student body.

Four years ago, after the first big snow of the season, second-year College student Justin Dubois broke his leg after deciding to go sledding on the biggest hill he could find. This past Sunday and Monday, University students hosted Sleepout for the Homeless — an annual event where participants get a sampling of what it is like to sleep without the basic necessities they take for granted, such as a rooftop, running water and access to sanitary bathrooms.

The word “tradition” is one that carries a lot of weight at this University. Students hear about it time and time again, from the beginning of orientation to the day of graduation. But at a school with almost 200 years of history, tradition is nebulous idea — many have come and gone, while others have lasted through the ages.
