The 16th annual Lighting of the Lawn focused heavily on inclusivity as thousands of students and members of the Charlottesville community gathered to listen to live performances and await the illumination of the Rotunda and Academical Village. The event drew an estimated 13,000 people as well as an additional 5,200 who watched from a livestream new to the event this year.

There is no doubt a degree from the University can open up countless doors to places beyond Grounds. However, for some graduates, the draw of the University is strong enough to keep them here well beyond their four years, as they return to the school as members of the faculty.

While each year tens of thousands of refugees seek safety in the United States, coming to the states is often a difficult and continuous process. At the University, first-year College student Ahmad Frahmand knows these legal, emotional and access challenges firsthand. In the face of his refugee status, Frahmand has found success and community — a story many organizations in Charlottesville hope to make the norm.

Kenneth Elzinga is the Robert C. Taylor Professor of Economics at the University. His research interests include antitrust economics, and religion and economics, according to the University of Virginia website. Although he does not consider himself a foodie, he still likes to eat out in the Charlottesville area. Elzinga’s favorite place to eat outdoors is the dock of his summer home at Lake Monticello.

More than 750 students gathered in Scott Stadium Thursday evening to partake in the fifth annual Hoos under the Lights event as part of Homecomings weekend. Virginia Homecomings brought in two live music groups — Caitlin and Savannah Lane, and the Kendall Street Company — for the event and organized free refreshments from The Pie Guy, Sweet Haus and U.Va. Dining.

With no air conditioning, limited space, and an outdoor jaunt necessary to access bathrooms and showers, life in one of Thomas Jefferson’s 54 original Lawn rooms is light on amenities. But the life of a "Lawnie" — rooted in historical grandeur and a vibrant social atmosphere — is central to what makes these rooms some of the most sought-after real estate at the University.
