The physical landscapes of the University and Charlottesville have undergone a number of physical changes over the past year, ranging from relatively small construction and design changes to broad initiatives that represent the University’s strategic goals and values. These changes — including major construction and capital renovations, new buildings, the removal of monuments and changes to businesses on the Corner — hold implications for the student body and the University and Charlottesville communities as a whole.

Young Americans for Freedom at U.Va. plans to host a public assembly titled “In Defense of Mr. Jefferson” Thursday in Newcomb Hall Ballroom at 7 p.m. The event is to promote the ideologies of conservatives at the University and defend the legacy of Thomas Jefferson. The topic has drawn criticism from some students due to Jefferson’s ownership of enslaved laborers.

Virginia football has partnered with the University’s Office for Sustainability to co-host Saturday’s game against Duke for the 11th time. At this annual Green Game, the Office for Sustainability seeks to minimize the amount of waste generated at the University, educate fans on the University’s sustainability efforts and provide students with a hands-on opportunity to contribute to the University’s sustainability goals.

Over 100 members of the University community gathered in Newcomb Hall Theater for the sixth annual Disorientation event Thursday evening. The student-led event included collaborative efforts from Political Latinxs United for Movement and Action in Society, Young Democratic Socialists of America at U.Va., undocUVA, Asians Revolutionizing Together and Student Council.

As coronavirus cases among students climbed in recent weeks to an average of 21 new cases per day, some professors expressed concern that symptomatic students are regularly reporting to class against the wishes of professors and University administrators. Expressing concerns about the Delta variant, educators urge students to continue wearing masks during class to protect themselves, their peers and faculty and staff.

Sisters Project Peru was founded in the summer of 2020 by rising second-year Architecture student Maya Koehn-Wu and her younger sister, Natalie Koehn-Wu, a freshman at Maggie Walker Governor’s School in Richmond. Their initiative aims to provide healthcare access to the community of Huacahuasi, a rural village in the Sacred Valley of Peru, by raising funds and awareness of the issues that the village faces.

Although their last three semesters did not go exactly as planned, many recent graduates of the Class of 2021 remain hopeful that their time at the University will lead them to success in their post-graduation careers. Despite challenges from the pandemic, many have found or are in the process of finding internships and jobs for this coming summer and fall.

Third-year Education student Lara Veldman and third-year College student Amber Peake founded Period at U.Va. to end period stigma after noticing that there was no contracted independent organization specifically serving menstruators in the University and Charlottesville communities to this level. The chapter was founded in the fall of 2020 and officially launched Feb. 1. Today, all 12 members are advocating for increased access to menstrual products in quarantine housing while also hoping to teach the University community about menstrual equity.

Despite initial disappointment concerning the cancellation of Final Exercises as planned for the Class of 2021, some fourth years expressed optimism given University President Ryan’s recent announcement that the University is reevaluating its plans thanks to the relaxation of statewide guidelines related to graduation ceremonies.
