This April, the Muslim Students Association is hosting their annual Islam Awareness Month to share the faith and traditions of Islam with the University community. Islam Awareness Month at the University features a variety of activities ranging from open prayer to moderated dialogues that will be held throughout Grounds. The MSA kicked off the month by painting Beta Bridge on April 7 and will end the month’s activities on April 29 with a Mindfulness in Islam discussion held in the Multicultural Student Center.

Former United States President Bill Clinton will be delivering the keynote address at the inaugural Presidential Ideas Festival at the University’s Miller Center. Hosted by University alum and CBS host John Dickerson between May 21-23, “PrezFest” will focus on the notion of “Democracy in Dialogue” and spend three days examining challenges in America today from a presidential perspective.

In honor of Women’s History Month, GirlUp — an organization which focuses on peer mentorship as a way for female students to empower elementary-school girls — and the Multicultural Student Center hosted a discussion March 26 about intersectionality in student activism at the University through the facets of race and gender. This discussion, held in the Multicultural Student Center, involved a group of 15 students, 14 of whom were female.

Kathy Galvin, a city councilor and adjunct professor at the University’s School of Architecture, officially announced her bid to run for the Virginia House of Delegates Seat for the 57th District — which covers the City of Charlottesville and parts of Albemarle County — in a public speech March 14. Galvin will be challenging Sally Hudson, an assistant professor of public policy, education and economics at the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy.
