Charlottesville City Council received community feedback at its meeting Monday as part of its ongoing public engagement process for the City Manager selection process. Interim City Manager Mike Murphy was appointed in late July, and a permanent manager is set to be selected in January or February of 2019.

Charlottesville Police Chief RaShall Brackney debriefed the City Council at its meeting Monday on the police department’s newest methods of collecting, organizing and synthesizing stop and frisk data. Brackney’s unannounced presentation came amid vocal criticisms in recent weeks — chiefly from local civil rights attorney Jeff Fogel — regarding the manner in which the data is digitally stored and presented to the public.

The Charlottesville City Council voted 4-1 Monday to approve a special-use permit for a seven-story Gallery Court Hotel adjacent to Lambeth Dorms and Carr’s Hill near the intersection of Emmet Street, Ivy Street and University Avenue, despite opposition from several residents over the structure’s height.

Rouzbeh Rastgarkafshgarkolaei, a graduate Engineering student and doctoral candidate, passed away Sunday, according to a community-wide email from Dean of Students Allen Groves sent Monday evening. Rastgarkafshgarkolaei was originally from Iran and graduated from Auburn University in 2014.

The University began its transition to paying full city water and sanitary sewer rates this past July, after the Charlottesville City Council approved a plan at a meeting in June that will require the rates to be paid in full by the summer of 2021.

The City Planning Commission recommended approval for a special-use permit for a six-story hotel Tuesday that would stand next to Lambeth and Carr’s Hill and is completely surrounded by the University. The proposed hotel — which will replace the Excel Inn & Suites that burned down in May 2017 on Emmet Street — requires a special-use permit for the building to be able to stand at 80 feet, 20 feet higher than Charlottesville’s zoning codes allow.

The Fall Activities Fair was held Monday on the South Lawn and Amphitheater, despite Student Council’s efforts to move the event to the full Lawn last semester. Ty Zirkle, a fourth-year College student and the Student Council vice president for organizations, said the proposal was ultimately met with “insurmountable concerns that [the change] would pose too much of an inconvenience to students.”

On the one-year anniversary of the deadly Unite the Right rally, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People hosted a “Time for Reflection and Healing” forum at the Zion Union Baptist Church Sunday evening. Among the speakers, past-president for the Albemarle-Charlottesville NAACP M. Rick Turner, University President Jim Ryan, Susan Bro and Assoc. History Prof. John Mason called for change against ongoing racism in Charlottesville.

A flexible meeting space on the Corner for U.Va. students and staff is transitioning to be used for offices for several University programs. OpenGrounds moved out of its Corner building on July 1 and will now be under the Office of the Vice President and Provost instead of the Office of the Vice President for Research, where the program used to be based.

The University Student Council has set the opening date of its U.Va. Community Food Pantry for early fall 2018. The Food Pantry is planned to open in the Runk Green Room for select hours — although these hours have not been decided on — and will serve students, faculty, staff and community members, allowing those who face food insecurity in Charlottesville to pick up food at the Pantry.

The University Board of Visitors Buildings and Grounds Committee met in the Rotunda Thursday to review the schematic designs for the renovations to Alderman library, Brandon Avenue and the new softball stadium, along with other new and continuing projects. The Board approved the 2018 Multi-Year Major Capital Plan, which outlined the funding for these projects.

Dr. Lisa Schievelbein, a former University student who graduated in 2001, filed a Title IX claim against English Prof. John Casey in November 2017 with allegations that he sexually assaulted her while she was a student. Schievelbein is the fourth alumna to speak out against Casey, who has not been teaching courses or advising students as of the spring 2018 semester while he is being investigated.
