After completing a search for a new dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the University announced Thursday that Prof. Christa Acampora will fill the position beginning Sept. 1. Acampora succeeds Provost Ian Baucom in the role and replaces Interim Dean David Hill.

University President Jim Ryan responded to the recent mass shootings in Buffalo, New York, Laguna Woods, California and Uvalde, Texas in a tweet Thursday morning. In the statement, Ryan emphasized that these incidents should not be accepted as a normal occurrence and urged members of the University community to check in with colleagues and friends.

A jury found George Huguely liable May 2 for $15 million in compensatory damages and other punitive damages in the murder of Virginia women’s lacrosse player Yeardley Love. Love’s mother Sharon Love and sister Lexie Love Hodges will each receive $7.5 million in damages.

The University announced the names of three keynote speakers for Finals Weekend Monday. Former basketball player Ralph Sampson will speak at Valedictory Exercises May 20, while Claudrena Harold, chair of the history department, and Dr. Taison Bell, assistant professor of pulmonary and critical care medicine, infectious diseases and international health and director of the medical intensive care unit at U.Va. Health, will speak at Final Exercises May 21 and 22.

Student Council voted to pass SR22-04, a resolution denouncing the University’s lifting of certain indoor mask mandates, and SR22-05, a resolution in support of the referendum that would reform the Honor Committee’s single-sanction policy, at its meeting Tuesday night. The representative body also heard executive updates on a variety of topics ranging from spring break transportation and support to the search for a new Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

The Inter-Sorority Council has canceled plans to host house tours in-person Thursday and Friday, per a message obtained by The Cavalier Daily. Instead, chapters will hold house tours virtually Friday — preferences and bid day will both remain in-person this weekend.

Provost Liz Magill is leaving the University to serve as the ninth president of the University of Pennsylvania beginning July 1. Ian Baucom, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, will succeed Magill.

Young Democratic Socialists of America at U.Va. hosted a political education event with between 30 and 40 attendees Wednesday in New Cabell Hall to launch its Defund UPD campaign. During the event, activists presented arguments for firing Timothy Longo, chief of the University police department and associate vice president for safety and security, and defunding the University's ambassador program.

After canceling Trick-or-Treating on the Lawn in an Oct. 8 email to Lawn and Range residents, the University offered several volunteering opportunities in place of the event, which typically draws hundreds of community members and families to the Lawn. Students were able to get involved in a number of different ways — from assembling treat bags to helping out with local Halloween festivals at City of Promise and Charlottesville City Schools.

The University’s annual Fire Safety and Security report was released Tuesday morning from Timothy Longo, associate vice president for safety and security and chief of police. The report revealed that almost every type of crime decreased during the three-year period from 2018 to 2020, while three fires in on-Grounds housing caused property damage.

Although many in-person activities were suspended last year due to COVID-19 restrictions, the pandemic also inspired the creation of new CIOs, from Undergraduate Women in Law to Pickleball at U.Va., among others. These clubs have given members a space to meet new friends, find new communities and learn and grow during a long year of isolation.

The Young Democratic Socialists of America at U.Va. shared a petition and open letter criticizing the University’s current COVID-19 protocols Wednesday. The letter’s demands include a semester-long indoor mask mandate, mandatory prevalence testing for all students every two weeks, expansion of contact tracing, modification of class attendance policies and hybrid learning options for students.

New masking guidelines will be in place at the University for both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, Provost Liz Magill and Chief Operating Officer J.J. Davis announced in an email sent Friday afternoon. All individuals are required to wear masks indoors on University property — including academic and administrative buildings, libraries, labs, dining halls, IM Rec facilities, and U.Va. Health locations — regardless of vaccination status beginning Monday, Aug. 9.

Former members of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Race, Memorials and Public Spaces are calling on the Charlottesville City Council to immediately cover the statues of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. The statement’s signees include former Chair Don Gathers, former Commissioner John Edwin Mason, Melvin Burruss, Andrea Douglas, Frank Dukes, Susan Lewis, Rachel Lloyd and Jane Smith.
