The 3,925 students enrolling in the Class of 2023 comprise the academically strongest and most diverse class in the history of the University, according to Dean of Admissions Gregory Roberts. Compared to the statistics from the Class of 2022, the new class features an increase in minority, first-generation and low-income populations. Though the school overenrolled above its target of 3,750, the incoming class fell one percent short of its in-state target, with 66 percent of students coming from the Commonwealth.

The Board of Visitors endorsed President Ryan’s 10-year strategic plan at the meeting Friday. The plan features 10 initiatives with a focus on community, student-diversity development and research preeminence and was cultivated through a series of alumni, student and community engagements. It builds upon the work of former University President Teresa Sullivan’s 2013 Cornerstone Plan with an overall mission of building a “Good and Great University.”

The University’s Board of Visitors met Thursday afternoon to approve the establishment of the School of Data Science as well as design schematics for the Inn at Darden and Arboretum. The approving committees, including the Academic and Student Life Committee and the Buildings and Grounds Committee, also discussed the currently offered undergraduate advising and support services.

As Muslims around the world began fasting May 6 for Ramadan, many Muslim students at the University will also be fasting during Final Exercises May 18 and 19. Final Exercises may end up leaving fasting Muslim students and their families outside in the heat for extended periods of time.

Zerlina Maxwell — political analyst, commentator, writer and speaker — spoke about the presence of rape culture and its perpetuating practices both in person and in the media in Minor Hall Thursday afternoon. Maxwell has offered commentary on CNN, FOX News and MSNBC and has written online content for CNN.com, Black Enterprise, The Washington Post and The Huffington Post. Approximately 30 people attended Maxwell’s presentation.

Black Alumni Weekend welcomed alumni, students and families back to Grounds with events beginning last Thursday evening and continued through Sunday at noon. As a biennial celebration dating back to 1985, BAW hosts a variety of educational, career networking and social activities.

As the 2018-2019 academic year begins to wind down, the University’s Honor and Judiciary Committees are beginning the annual process of transitioning administrations which formally took place April 1. In an interview with The Cavalier Daily, Ory Streeter, fourth-year Medical student and outgoing Honor chair, and Kevin Warshaw, fourth-year Engineering student and outgoing UJC chair, reflected upon their time in office and the achievements of their respective organizations during the past year.

The Honor Committee passed a reconstructed version of the Contributory Health Impairment bylaws last Sunday evening. This version, named V2 by the Contributory Mental Disorder Working Group addressing the effort, will replace the interim psychological procedures and bylaws put in place in November 2018.

At their meeting Sunday, the Honor Committee announced third-year College student Lillie Lyon as their new chair for the 2019-2020 school year. The chair and vice-chairs were selected during a closed session at last weekend’s annual retreat.

The Honor Committee passed a bylaw change to include certificate-seeking students in credit-granting programs as part of the eligible population for Honor representatives during their meeting Sunday evening.

Honor Committee members discussed four amendments to the Committee’s bylaws Sunday evening allowing Public Summary information on Informed Retractions of related offenses to be used as evidence in an Honor trial. Public Summaries are an online publication of annual Honor sanction outcomes at the University, with the far majority of them being anonymous. According to the website where they are posted, the summaries are “meant to better inform the University student body about the workings of the Honor System in regard to the major issues brought forth at Honor hearings.”

The Honor Committee’s recently-released Bicentennial Report includes an in-depth review and analysis of the Committee’s Informed Retraction (IR) since its implementation in 2013. The report finds that the sanction option has reduced the number of hearings necessary in the adjudication process while also decreasing the number of guilty hearing outcomes.

Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies released a promotional audio podcast Feb. 6 for their podcast series, titled “Notes on the State.” The six-part series produced for the University’s Bicentennial is scheduled to release its first episode on President’s Day — Monday, Feb. 18.

Members of the Jewish community at the University gathered Sunday afternoon to hear the story of Holocaust survivor Dr. Roger Loria. Loria, emeritus professor of microbiology and immunology at Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Medicine, spoke at the event sponsored by the Hillel Jewish Leadership Council in partnership with the Brody Jewish Center.

The Honor Committee rejected a motion to add an additional Engineering representative to its members Sunday evening. If passed, the motion would have required the student body’s approval through the University Board of Elections ballot for the spring.
