The Honor Committee passed two proposed bylaws regarding non-degree students and administrative abilities of the executive committee during its meeting Sunday night. The decisions were unanimous, and the changes were put into effect Monday.

Third-year College student Ellen Yates and fourth-year College student Rachael Hazlett were appointed to the position of Vice President for Administration and Chair of the Financial Accessibility Committee, respectively, last Tuesday, filling the positions left vacant by fourth-year Batten student Taylor Overton and third-year Curry student Nia Augustine.

The construction of Bond House apartments on Brandon Avenue has been behind schedule due to winter weather constraints, but the University anticipates the building will be completed in time for students to move in this August.

The University’s Class of 2019 will walk down the Lawn for the final time Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19. Under the sea of brightly colored balloons and carefully decorated caps will be a sea of graduating students preparing to leave their past four years in Charlottesville behind, with next steps ranging from careers in healthcare to gap years and studying for graduate school exams, as well as reflecting on their experiences and the role the University and its resources, or lack thereof, have played in shaping them.

The University community hosted a “Celebration of Life” event Sunday morning in Old Cabell Hall for Rehan Baddeliyanage, the fourth-year Engineering student who unexpectedly passed away in an accident over spring break. The remembrance event was followed by a reception in the McIntire School of Commerce’s Art Gallery and Courtyard. Approximately 200 people were in attendance.

The third annual Liberation and Freedom Day event was held Sunday afternoon in the Rotunda Dome Room. The annual event marks the anniversary of the end of slavery in Albemarle County and the City of Charlottesville, which occurred on March 3, 1865 when community members surrendered to incoming Union forces at the foot of Carr’s Hill.

In honor of Black History Month, the International Residential College hosted an event entitled “Where Do We Go From Here?” Saturday afternoon to discuss Gov. Ralph Northam’s (D-Va.) blackface scandal, Attorney General Mark Herring’s blackface confession, cultural appropriation at Bid Day, the Beta Bridge vandalism and issues of diversity at the University.

The Office for Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights issued a statement Jan. 18 announcing the University will be providing academic accommodations for Muslim students observing Ramadan during finals period this semester. The statement advises faculty to “anticipate receiving requests for religious accommodations” from their students and to approve “reasonable” requests.

The Board of Visitors Committee on the U.Va.’s College at Wise met earlier this month to introduce a new marketing and branding initiative and to discuss the reduced tuition program in the Appalachian region. The Committee also heard a report on the 2018 fall enrollment at Wise.

The Hillel Jewish Leadership Council has been hosting a weeklong series of events to honor the victims of the deadly shooting of Oct. 27 at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pa. and to raise funds for the affected community.

Del. David Toscano (D-Charlottesville), the Virginia House of Delegates Minority Leader who represents the 57th District, spoke to the University Democrats Wednesday night in Clark Hall. Toscano’s speech centered around the importance of voting in the 2018 midterm elections and the possible ways for Democrats to win the U.S. House majority.
