Before her sophomore year, Duke lacrosse player Morgan Rodgers sustained a severe knee injury, placing her in a 12-month rehabilitation program. A culmination of stressors after the injury led to her life being gone too soon. Faced with feelings of isolation, anxiety and depression, Rodgers suffered in silence. In July of 2019, Rodgers died by suicide at 22 years old.

Fans aren’t the only ones missing from sporting events this year. Virginia spirit teams — including Cavman, the dance team, all-girl cheer and co-ed cheer — are currently unable to perform on the field at games under new ACC mandates. Although team members were prepared for an unconventional fall season, they were not aware this year’s changes would include being prohibited from practicing. Since being notified Oct. 13 that Virginia’s training staff would be unable to handle the spirit teams’ return, members have created an open petition, asking Virginia Athletics to implement the teams’ pre-approved practice plans.

As former Virginia quarterback Bryce Perkins’ back-up the past two years, sophomore quarterback Brennan Armstrong has appeared in just 11 career games — the same number of games as Virginia’s current 2020 schedule. As he takes over this year, the stakes are already high for Armstrong’s inaugural game as starter, as the Cavaliers face ACC foe Duke Saturday to kick off their season. Despite the newfound pressure of being the Cavaliers’ leader in a global pandemic filled with uncertainty, Armstrong is confident and excited about the highly-anticipated season to come.

The collegiate careers of NCAA Division I athletes are not always straightforward. Many athletes across the country choose to redshirt — the practice of withdrawing from collegiate sporting events for one year, thus extending their playing eligibility by an additional year. Athletes can redshirt for various reasons, ranging from injury recovery to skills development.

Lately, junior transfer guard Tomas Woldetensae has been on fire. Recruited to join a depleted guard corps after Ty Jerome and Kyle Guy declared for the NBA Draft and Marco Anthony transferred, Woldetensae had a disappointing start to the season. He shot 20.6 percent from the field and 14.3 percent from three-point range through Virginia’s first seven games. In the last four games, however, Woldetensae shot 47.6 percent from the field and 53.3 percent from three, including a season-high 11 points in the Cavaliers’ 56-47 win over North Carolina.

Gone are the high-school themed outfits coloring basketball stands full with friends cheering your name — one can only imagine the pressure of transitioning from a team that revolved around a small-town star to a team fresh off of winning a national title.
