This semester, the Corner and other locations have seen an increase in the popularity of trivia nights. While Mellow Mushroom has held a weekly trivia night since its opening 16 years ago, other locations — such as Crozet Pizza and World of Beer — have begun opening their doors to Charlottesville’s trivia enthusiasts.

We tend to think of college as the liminal period between adolescence and adulthood — the time after teenagers leave their homes and venture into oblivion and the new life ahead of them. However, some don’t follow this conventional path, choosing instead to enter the workforce before pursuing a degree. Experience compels these adults to seek further education, matching professional knowledge with classroom-based comprehension. With the University’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies, these adults have found opportunities to delve deeper into the college life we often overlook.

On early Saturday mornings, University Politics Prof. Allen Lynch would go out to the local high school football field with a bag of footballs. He would kick the footballs to the other end of the field, then fetch them to kick them again. The stands could be filled or empty — an audience didn’t matter to Lynch, as he would practice his kicking simply for the pure joy of it.

Instacart, a one-hour grocery delivery service, expanded its services in August to encompass the Charlottesville area. As members of the Charlottesville community, students at the University will the opportunity to experience firsthand this new enterprise that has sparked interest all over the country.

Every semester, the First Year Players coalesce to organize a student-run production. Their musicals introduce to the University talented, energetic and engaging performers in the first-year class. Though the cast and stage managers are restricted to first-year or transfer students, the people behind-the-scenes — the technical staff, artistic staff and production staff — can be members of any class.

When University students hear the words “Kendall Street Company,” their faces light up. They may think about the time they saw them play in the Kappa Alpha fraternity house, watching them jam on the stage of Boylan Heights or listening to their new album, “Earth Turns,” on Spotify. They may envision the invigorating energy radiating from the instruments and their players, or they may recall the mellow tunes reverberating throughout the venue. To many, the words “Kendall Street Company” evoke memories of good times with good people.

As the holidays draw closer, anticipation of the joyous season builds in the air. As soon as the Thanksgiving dinner tables are cleared, people hit the stores to catch the Black Friday sales, families begin to put up their Christmas trees and holiday music blares from the radio. But most of all, community initiatives are organized to further amplify excitement for the holidays — and in Charlottesville — several events have been planned to spread the joy.
