The Honor Committee held two votes at their weekly meeting Sunday, one of which resulting in the change to gender-inclusive language in the Honor bylaws. The other vote resolved to introduce a referendum in next semester’s University elections to change the Honor Constitution language to be gender-inclusive as well.

While students at the University have witnessed construction and restoration of the Academical Village in recent years, such projects have been occurring for the past two centuries. An 1826 letter, written by Edgar Allan Poe to his stepfather John Allan, is part of an online exhibit at the University called “Arise and Build!” and mentions the construction of the Rotunda.

Several students at the University were impacted by a national phishing email scam Wednesday. While the emails were sent from a suspicious, non-University address, they appeared to be messages from Google Docs that used the names of people familiar with the recipient to make the message seem credible.

The University Center for Politics welcomed Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam (D) Thursday to speak at an event for the centers’ Leaders for Democracy Fellowship program. Northam, who is running for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, addressed the 23 fellows and students in attendance on his accomplishments in office, policy priorities and aspirations for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

With high box office earnings and favorable critical reviews, the first “Conjuring” film was a success and proved to be a highlight in director James Wan’s career. The acting, writing, scares and pace were impeccable throughout the movie. The film captured the spirit of a 1970s horror flick by being based on a true story. Many films of this quality are destined for lousy sequels, with filmmakers only trying to ape what worked so well before. However, this is not the case with “The Conjuring 2.”

Former Charlottesville resident and singer-songwriter Dave Matthews brought his critically acclaimed band back into town May 7 at John Paul Jones Arena. To promote the show, Matthews held a pop-up gallery at the old Coca-Cola building on Preston Avenue — an exciting and engaging experience for any major fan.

“Star Trek” veteran Anton Yelchin stars as the male lead in “Green Room” — one of the best horror films of the year. Pat (Yelchin), the lead singer of a punk band, and his bandmates are trying to make their way in the world by taking small gigs. However, things go south when he discovers the remains of a recent murder, and he comes into trouble with a gang of neo-Nazi skinheads.

Jason Jones and Samantha Bee, former correspondents for “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” have left Comedy Central, signed on at TBS and created a show of their own — “The Detour.” It may be the television equivalent of “National Lampoon’s Vacation” but “The Detour” highlights the creative husband-wife duo’s ability to blend silly gags with clever writing.

Last week, at local coffee shop Milli Joe, the University English department continued its Master of Fine Arts Reading Series. The stars of the night, creative writing graduate students Annie Pittman and Helen Chandler, shared poetry and prose, respectively, with the community, receiving well-deserved respect and admiration.
