Two years of research led by University researchers into sediment samples obtained from the Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica — also referred to as the “Doomsday Glacier” — came to its conclusion earlier this month with the publishing of an article by Nature Geoscience. This study revealed that the Thwaites Glacier has retreated twice as rapidly as expected. With similar retreat events feasible to occur again, our coastlines are directly impacted by the fate of this glacier.

In collaboration with the University’s Repair Lab — which seeks to understand the relationship between climate change and racial injustice — students enrolled in HIST 4501 “The Climate Crisis” this spring semester have been searching the archives of the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library for historical data on the rising housing prices in Norfolk and using this information to connect historical trends in the increase in real estate prices.

Third-year Engineering student Sarah Besecky has always been fascinated by the process of building construction, from observing the progress of local construction sites to taking courses on the subject and pursuing a career in construction management. In an effort to achieve her dream of working in the civil engineering field, Besecky applied for an internship at a company in the midst of renovating one of her favorite buildings on Grounds — Alderman Library.

The COVID-19 pandemic has required an unprecedented level of collaboration between individuals from all disciplines and specializations, as the need for an effective, wide ranging response requires insight from a variety of viewpoints. Since the first case of COVID-19 was identified in the U.S. over 19 months ago, this trans-disciplinary collaboration has been exemplified by the Network Systems Science and Advanced Computing division of the U.Va. Biocomplexity Institute, which has played an important role in tracking the spread of the coronavirus across the U.S. and Commonwealth.

Second-year Engineering students Dianna Damenova and Connie Zhang established a chapter of Women in Cybersecurity at the University on Feb. 2. It was their shared desire to empower and connect students outside of the classroom that led them to create the group, which focuses on bringing together women interested in cybersecurity and giving them the confidence to pursue a career in a male-dominated field.
