Around 100 community members gathered around the University’s George Rogers Clark monument on the Corner Thursday evening in support of various demands put forth by Indigenous community activists. The demonstration came one day before President Jim Ryan and the Board of Visitors are set to discuss Racial Equity Task Force recommendations and the University’s historic landscape.

In the wake of several weeks of protests and demonstrations across the country calling for racial justice and an end to police brutality, the University’s Honor and Judiciary Committees are looking to take actions to address racial bias and a lack of diversity within their institutions by analyzing past case outcomes for racial disparities and expanding recruitment to increase diversity of their memberships.

Following nationwide protests in response to the murder of George Floyd and police brutality, University President Jim Ryan released a statement on social media Sunday morning that elicited strong reactions from community members for what they saw as a failure to adequately address the underlying causes of ongoing national protests. Among those who took to social media to respond to Ryan’s statements was Zyahna Bryant, a rising second-year College student and Charlottesville community organizer, who publicly announced her resignation from the President’s Council on UVA-Community Partnerships after reading his statement.

The students from Theories and Case Studies — a class required for the Global Development Studies major — collaborated together on a semester-long project that culminated in a final presentation Saturday. The students’ self-designed project entailed a thought experiment through which they imagined an anarchist community center rooted in mutual respect and responsibility that rejects hierarchy and prioritizes mutual aid.

The University will receive $11.7 million through the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, or CARES Act, signed into law on March 27 to help mitigate the fiscal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In accordance with the Act’s stipulation that half of the aid received must directly benefit students, the University will distribute $5.8 million in aid to students.

The Board of Visitors’ Finance Committee convened Friday morning in the Rotunda to discuss upper-class housing construction, the 2020 legislative session — including a brief reference to a proposed bill regarding in-state tuition for undocumented students — medical contracts and the University’s endowment, the specifics of which were discussed in a closed session.

An ongoing survey spearheaded by two students aims to collect disaggregate data about the Asian Pacific Islander Desi American population of the University and to provide an updated portrait of the community since the last survey was conducted in 2005. The survey is part of an ongoing national movement pushing for data-disaggregation for APIDA communities, and it will close Friday, March 6.

The City of Charlottesville had planned to begin a historic survey of the 10th and Page neighborhood last week, but the survey was delayed after a Nov. 6 community meeting held at the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center during which community members present expressed the need for further discussion including more residents.

The U.Va. Community Food Pantry partnered with U.Va. Dining Sept. 25 to raise 800 pounds of food through its “Stock the Pantry” event. At Newcomb Dining Hall, students had the option to donate a meal swipe to secure one pound of food for the pantry — a student-run volunteer initiative, started by former College student Gwen Dilworth, that seeks to alleviate food insecurity on Grounds.
