When he committed to the Cavaliers, Jay Huff was an under-the-radar prospect — Virginia had been one of his first official scholarship offers — but for those who knew him, Huff was defined by limitless potential. It is not often a seven-footer with a three point shot comes to Charlottesville, let alone one who had been receiving interest from Duke, as Huff had.

Virginia men’s basketball was unanimously voted the best team in the country in the latest AP Poll, a position they have held for the last month. They have undoubtedly the most impressive season in college basketball — the selection committee named them the number one overall seed for a reason. Yet, there still seems to be lingering doubt about their ability to win in March.

National Signing Day passed Wednesday, and the Virginia football team capped a relatively quiet recruiting period by signing three new recruits to its incoming class.

Virginia men’s basketball started the season unranked, ending a string of 63-consecutive weeks in the AP Top 25. The national narrative was that Virginia had lost too much talent to graduation and transfers, including both of last season’s leading scorers in London Perrantes and Marial Shayok.

Virginia accepted a bid to the Military Bowl Sunday to face off against the Navy Midshipmen in Annapolis, Md. Dec. 28.

Like so many games the past few seasons, Virginia’s performance against Pittsburgh Saturday was a massive disappointment despite senior safety Quin Blanding’s superlative play. Blanding led the Cavaliers in tackles, had a tackle for loss and provided an interception late in the third quarter to give the Cavaliers one last chance at turning the game around, which they were unfortunately incapable of doing.

If you were to walk around Grounds and pick a random student, it’s likely he or she could name a good portion of the basketball team. After a key game, it’s common to hear discussion in class, whether bemoaning a loss or celebrating a victory.

On Sept. 17, 2016, Virginia lost to Connecticut, 10-13, after missing a game-tying field goal as time expired. A year later when they played again, the result was much different, as the Cavaliers were up 24-0 at halftime and rolled to a 38-18 victory.

Although Virginia football’s 33-year streak of having a player selected in the NFL draft came to an end this past spring, it wasn’t due to a lack of talent on the roster.

When Coach Bronco Mendenhall was hired to replace Mike London last year, Virginia’s football program inspired optimism for the first time in years. However, after a first season in which Virginia lost to FCS contender Richmond, got beaten by Virginia Tech, 52-10, and went 2-10 (1-7 ACC), the optimism around Grounds has deflated.

Over the past few years, Virginia sports have been nothing short of phenomenal across the board. Since the beginning of the 2014-15 calendar year, the Cavaliers boast NCAA championships in men’s soccer, baseball, a runner-up finish in women’s soccer, two national championships in men’s tennis and numerous other accolades — including ACC Championships from women’s swimming and diving and rowing.

There was never any doubt about as to who the leaders of this year’s baseball team would be. Junior Adam Haseley would hold down a weekend spot in the rotation, and centerfield when he did not pitch. Junior Ernie Clement would hit towards the top of the order and man a middle infield position. Classmate junior Pavin Smith would provide power from first base as well.

This past Sunday, the Z Society commended men’s tennis coach Brian Boland for his 16 years of service at the University. It might seem odd for a secret society to commend a coach during a random conference match. However, because Boland only has two regular season matches remaining in Charlottesville — recently agreeing to become head of USTA Player Development — he has more than earned the honor.

Public perception of the Virginia football program is poor at the moment, and for good reason. The Cavaliers finished only 2-10 (1-7 ACC) this past season, the latest in a long string of disappointing seasons. However, many seem to feel the program is capable of being competitive with the best programs in the ACC conference.

Much of the buzz around Virginia athletics in recent weeks has rightfully been about the basketball program. However, as March turns to April and the weather on Grounds improves, eyes will increasingly turn to Davenport Field and the Virginia baseball team..

Wednesday afternoon, Virginia basketball announced that both junior guard Marial Shayok and sophomore forward Jarred Reuter plan to transfer from Virginia this offseason. Neither has announced where they plan to play for the upcoming season.

Given the way the season ended for Virginia men’s basketball — the blowout loss to Florida in the tournament and the gradual fade down the stretch to the tune of a .500 record since February — it’s easy to feel down about the state of the team.

With March Madness swiftly approaching, people around the country with only a passing interest in college basketball are filling out their brackets. As a University student, I commonly get asked by family members and high school friends what to make of this year’s Virginia team.

Few books have impacted the sports world as much as Michael Lewis’ “Moneyball.” Among other things, the book illustrated a stark difference between what advanced statistics and common wisdom said about teams and players. This dichotomy has been at the center of sports debate ever since — whether the eye test or the numbers are a more accurate measure of true ability.

After Sunday night’s Super Bowl win by the New England Patriots, there was a lot of talk about if the Patriots are the greatest team of the modern era. Pundits claimed that a run like theirs could never be topped. You’ll have to forgive Virginia Men’s tennis coach Brian Boland, though, if he isn’t impressed.
