The University announced the Hannah Graham Memorial Award Friday during a launch event at OpenGrounds on the Corner. The $10,000 award will help one student per year do public health work in a French-speaking, developing nation.

The Cavalier Daily has more than its share of problems. At its core, every person in the editing chain believes they are better writers, editors and reporters than those below them. To fully harness the paper’s talent, The Cavalier Daily must fight this culture and trade writing quality for writer motivation. But, throughout, I have valued the News section’s dedication to fair, unbiased coverage.

University President Teresa Sullivan announced the formation of an ad hoc committee on public safety Monday. The committee, formally titled the Ad Hoc Group on University Climate and Culture, is chaired by Sullivan and includes two members of the Board of Visitors, two faculty, four students, one staff member, one dean and four alumni and parent representatives.

Student Council President Jalen Ross, a third-year Engineering student, alongside Vice-President for Administration Sky Miller, a third-year College student, and Vice-President for Organizations Kyle West, a second-year Commerce student, were sworn in Thursday. The ceremony took place in the Dome Room of the Rotunda.

The incoming University Judiciary Committee selected third-year College student Timothy Kimble as Chair, second-year Law student Sam Brickfield as vice-chair for sanctions and third-year Batten student Shanice Hardy as vice-chair for trials Sunday night. The Committee did not fill the vice-chair for first-years position.

The incoming Honor Committee elected third-year College student Nicholas Hine as its chair Saturday. The Committee also elected second-year College student Martese Johnson, third-year Commerce student Joe Martin and third-year College students Nick Lee and Henley Hopkinson as vice-chairs. All but Hopkinson ran in contested elections.

Last Wednesday brought increased tensions to the already heated debate about Medicaid expansion, as state Republicans and several local leaders called on Democrats to pass a budget and consider Medicaid expansion afterward. Democrats held Republicans were ignoring a good case for giving more Virginians health insurance.
