Charlottesville Circuit Court Judge Richard Moore ruled Tuesday that the City of Charlottesville must remove the black shrouds covering the statues of Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson in Emancipation and Justice Parks, respectively. Moore previously postponed his decision about removing the shrouds earlier this month.

Del. David Toscano (D-Charlottesville) introduced a bill last week to the General Assembly of Virginia, calling upon delegates to revise the code on memorial and monument removal. The current Code of Virginia, 15.2-1812, makes it unlawful for authorities or any other persons to remove the erected monuments or memorials of war conflict.

One alumna and two non-alumni of the University have donated a combined $100,000 to create a Bicentennial Scholarship in honor of Heather Heyer. The University’s Bicentennial Scholarship Fund matched the donation with $50,000.

The University Board of Visitors will consider a resolution this week to rename an International Residential College dormitory from bearing the name of a eugenicist and former College Dean to that of the University’s first graduate from China. If approved, the move would rename the Lewis House to the Yen House.

The Department of Justice has appointed former FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III, a 1973 alumnus of the University Law School, to serve as special counsel to oversee the investigation into Russian tampering in the 2016 presidential election and the country’s alleged ties to President Donald Trump’s campaign. The appointment was announced on Wednesday.

After making it to the final round of the national competition for the second year in a row, the Virginia Mock Trial team won the national championship by defeating Yale University, the same college the team lost to in the final round last year. The competition was held in Los Angeles last weekend.

As the University moves towards more sustainable practices across the board, several faculty and students have started to focus on bringing local foods to Grounds. Rep. Tom Garrett (R-Va.) proposed a bill in Congress Monday that would rename Charlottesville’s federal courthouse after former University Law School Professor and late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. The building would officially be named the Justice Antonin G. Scalia Federal Building and United States Courthouse.

A group of students gathered in New Cabell Hall Wednesday night for a question and answer panel with the University Honor Committee. The event was planned and hosted by the Minority Rights Coalition preceding endorsements for Honor candidates this coming weekend.
