A few weeks ago I helped my younger sister move into her new dorm room, where we unpacked boxes of clothes, school supplies, bedding and of course, loads of disinfectant wipes. Her room gradually began to take shape, and I was hit with a wave of nostalgia once we finished — I’d only been in a dorm room once since I’d moved out of mine several years earlier, and my sister’s new room reminded me of my own first-year home.

A few weeks ago, I returned to Charlottesville for the first time since early March to move out of my old apartment. I’d lived in the same place for the past two years and shared a room with my close friend, so I knew it’d feel bittersweet to leave a place with such fond memories. My mom and younger sister volunteered to help me haul the furniture to my new apartment, and we piled into the car as it began to drizzle. I was eager to return to Charlottesville after my longest stretch of time away from the University while a student, and my sister was excited to visit for one of the first times since she learned she’d been admitted to the Class of 2024.

I turned 21 a few days ago, checking off one of the first milestones of adulthood. I’ve planned and celebrated my friends’ twenty-first birthdays this past year, and I’ve looked forward to my own and imagined how I’d like to spend it.

At some point in between high school and college, my sleep schedule evolved from religiously going to bed by 11:15 p.m. to falling asleep at whatever hour I finished my work — even if it meant I was up until the early hours of the morning. My bedtime falls irregularly between midnight and 3 a.m., so my sleep schedule is a bit of a joke among my roommates and a frequently-voiced concern of my mother’s. I can operate fine with little sleep, but I wanted to see if I could tell a difference if I consistently got the ideal amount of sleep recommended by health professionals.

Have you ever found yourself walking into class with wet hair because of a spontaneous rain shower? Stuck with wet socks for the day because you wore the wrong shoes to your first class? Realized your backpack isn’t waterproof as you pulled out your damp laptop? I’ve unfortunately experienced many rainy day mishaps, and I’d like to share my tips on surviving this year’s spring showers while braving the perilous walk to class.

Since the age of five, I’ve kept my nails clipped short so that there’s no white part remaining, only pink. My childhood piano teacher firmly believed that this was essential for proper playing, and if I felt my fingers slipping across the keys during practice, we’d pause and I’d trim my nails over the trash can with the clipper she kept on her keyring.

A few weeks ago, my younger sister Sally came to visit and watch a football game with me and my friends. Although it seems way too soon for her to be graduating, she’ll be done with high school in May — and before I know it, she’ll be preparing for college.

Last week, I moved back into my apartment for the second time, relieved that I was only carrying clothes in duffel bags and not furniture. As I entered my building, I passed families lugging enormous couches and tables, and I cringed as I remembered how sore I felt after maneuvering furniture from cars, up the stairs and into my living room.

Many kids carry around a stuffed animal or security blanket for comfort, but I was known for always carrying a book with me wherever I went. My favorites genres were fantasy, science fiction and fairy tales, and I reread my favorite novels until I could recall the characters’ memories as well as my own.

If you were to walk into my apartment, the first thing you’d probably notice is the art on our walls. When we first moved in, my roommates and I collected pieces that we loved and that reflected our personalities. I was excited to decorate a space that showed my passion for art, and I wanted our apartment to look unique but homey.

About a month ago, I told my friend that I’d run a half marathon with her. She ran one last year when we were first-years, and we agreed that training together would make it more fun. This was a bold move considering I was struggling to run for more than 30 minutes at the time, and running 13.1 miles seemed unthinkable — even when I was in my best shape.

If cooking were a religion, my mother’s family would be its most dedicated worshippers. Over the years, our ritual of sitting down for special meals has become more complicated and revered, with each one becoming larger and more elaborate. My family’s love for food is unmatched.

I consider myself to be a pretty timid driver — I have the road rage of a sweet old lady and I spend most of my time in the right lane on the highway. I’m not a shy person, but I used to hold an irrational fear of crashing my car every time I got behind the wheel.

While sitting in class a few weeks ago, I noticed a girl with earrings almost identical to mine. I normally wouldn’t have found this strange — my earrings weren’t very unique, and I had seen many other girls wearing similar hoops. However, this girl in particular was about 3,600 years old.

My grandfather has mastered the art of talking to new people. While spending time with him as a child, I would become embarrassed when he’d casually strike up a conversation with anyone he met. This happened especially in lively restaurants, and I’d return from the bathroom to find him deep in discussion with an entire row of tables. He was never impolite or too nosy, but it’s obviously socially taboo to simply begin chatting with everyone you meet.
