The Student Council’s Buildings and Grounds Committee received funding this past December to construct a Student Remembrance Garden between Clemons Library, Newcomb Hall and the Special Collections Library. The garden is meant to be a space to commemorate the lives of students who have died while attending the University.

Relay for Life at the University hosted a date auction Feb. 9, where they sold off lunch dates or sports lessons with University professors, singers and athletes to the highest bidders. All of the money raised went directly to Relay for Life’s fundraising goals for the American Cancer Society.

The Women’s March on Washington Jan. 21 drew crowds from all over the country to protest for women’s rights. The march included University students who traveled to the nation’s capital to attend this moment in history.

Five University organizations and the Batten School of Public Policy hosted the “Get Out The Vote Rally” Tuesday, urging students to get to the polls on Nov. 8. The bipartisan event featured speakers from University Democrats, College Republicans, Youth for Gary Johnson and the Black Student Alliance, as well as Charlottesville community members and former registrars.

FeelGood — a relatively new contracted independent organization on Grounds — is a chapter of an international non-profit organization that focuses on fighting global hunger and poverty by selling grilled cheese sandwiches on college campuses.

The Trump Winery’s tasting room opened to the public in 2011, and boasts of having one of the best — if not the best — views a Virginia vineyard has to offer. The winery’s 195 acres of grapes and 1,300 acre estate is situated less than seven miles from Grounds, which has made it a popular venue for students and locals alike to visit.

This past Saturday and Sunday, the University hosted the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event and featured 116 teams, comprised of 1,346 participants, who raised $179,333.16 supporting the fight against cancer.

During her first year on Grounds, second-year College student Katherine Philips found herself at a table at the activities fair with information about the Fralin Art Museum’s docent program. The Shooting Star Foundation is working to shine a light within the University community this school year, aiming to raise awareness about the consequences of various party drugs through a series of events. The organization was founded following the passing of Shelley Goldsmith, a second-year College student whose death last year was linked to the use of the popular drug MDMA, or “Molly”.
