When I ended my multi-year long situationship in December, I did not know what to expect. Part of me thought that it wasn't really over and we would find each other again. But as the weeks passed, it started to sink in that for the first time in several years, I was truly single and alone — no school break flings or talking stages to jump into. I can't say that I am totally happy being single, or that I never feel disconnected from my happily coupled up friends, but this breakup has taught me to focus on the relationships that matter most to me now.

My hair has been through a lot over the years. I’ve experienced the childhood bowl cut, the hip length hair of my tween years and the obligatory trauma bangs. When I changed my part from the side to the middle in 2020, I was obsessed with being on-trend and distancing myself from a younger version of me. I spent years hiding behind popular styles such as loose-fitting clothes. But my recent decision to disregard trends — and part my hair slightly to the right — has allowed me to live in the present and embrace who I truly am.

Ever since the leaves started changing and the air grew chilly, I have felt dread creeping up on me. At risk of sounding like a melodramatic hater, I am going to be upfront and say that I think winter is the worst season. The days are shorter and darker, the air is colder, food is heavier and clothes are baggier. Some people love it, and they relish in chunky sweaters and snowy weather — not me, though. I cringe at the idea of snow and scowl when I see the temperature going down. Still, experiencing the full force of all four seasons for 21 years has made me reckon with the fact that winter is unavoidable. I’ve come to realize that maybe I can find some joy in the cold darkness.

When I arrived at the University as a second-year transfer student, I remember being told that my options were endless. I could remain connected with the transfer community and join organizations dedicated to helping other new transfers acclimate or I could ignore it, join other organizations and leave behind the transfer identifier. Personally, I wanted to forget. I wanted so badly to pretend that I had been a “Hoo” the whole time in part because I thought that my life would be a whole lot better if it was true. As I spent my time trying to figure out my place at the University, I slowly realized that ignoring my experiences would not make me more a part of the community, it would only make me feel more alienated.
