If you walk around Grounds on any given day, you’re pretty much guaranteed to see students strolling on the Lawn holding a fresh El Jefe Roots bowl. Even though it hasn’t been on the Corner long, Roots and its employees hold an important place in the University’s food culture.

Nestled comfortably in between CVS and Rebecca’s Natural Food in the Barracks Road Shopping Center, at first brush, HotCakes Gourmet sounds like a pancake place. HotCakes is actually a mom-and-pop startup founded in 1986 by two graduates of the University. While it’s hard to imagine Charlottesville without its high concentration of restaurants, when it was founded, HotCakes was a unique enterprise.

Regardless of when students finally arrive on Grounds, all share the decision to come home to the University. However, transfer students do not get the same extensive orientation that awaits first years the summer before college. Instead, transfer students receive a network of support to help their transition and a one-day orientation program.

When constructing the ideal schedule, travel time can easily be overlooked. As a result, students always find creative new ways to get across Grounds to class. One mode of transportation that has become increasingly more common is the Boosted board.
