Everybody longs for a cool nickname. A good nickname is more than simply a word — it is a lifestyle. Picture this — you are out on a first date, trying to make a good first impression, when your friend passes you and says, “Sup, Knuckles.” Your date would certainly be impressed by your tough reputation. However, nicknames can also backfire. Imagine this scenario — you are walking down the street, minding your own business, when a friend shouts out, “Hey, Zip! Your fly is down!” To avoid these sorts of embarrassing situations — I’m embarrassed for you — you must take nickname-crafting into your own hands.

Studying abroad is your chance to apply years spent learning a language — or working all the way up to level two on Duolingo — to real life. U.Va. has always been proud of its renowned study abroad programs. U.Va.’s International Studies Office crafts these programs to immerse students in some of the most diverse environments of their lives — surrounded by a group of like-minded U.Va. students at all times. ISO emphasizes that participants will meet people from all walks of life and have the opportunity to interact with them in another language, and that students will instead, of course, choose to speak English with the group of peers on their flight. ISO advertises that it will offer you the chance to immerse yourself in another culture — and students will ponder this fact as they hide away in a foreign Starbucks watching YouTube.

Holidays are tough. While finding the perfect presents for others can be difficult, receiving gifts is by far the most challenging part of the holiday season. How do you express your gratitude? Or perhaps more accurately, how do you hide your tears of disappointment? After consulting expert gift-receivers, I have compiled a survival guide to receiving gifts this holiday season. From social etiquette rules to thank-you note ideas, this manual contains everything you need to have the perfect reaction to every present you unwrap this winter.

I have written this article at least twice. The first time, I wrote about how all my school mascots have been angry men — a Lancer, a Highlander, and a Cavalier. I described the University’s poster child, CavMan, as a “gym rat with facial hair and anger problems.” I attributed my lack of school spirit to the lack of normal mascots. I begged for “anything other than an angry man.”

At the beginning of spring break, I flew out to France as the classic American tourist who didn’t speak the language. After one week, I returned to Charlottesville as a seasoned traveler who could navigate conversations in French with ease and charisma. Here are my secrets.

What is Valentine’s Day without last-minute Hallmark cards from CVS? This year, Hallmark has outdone themselves with their Valentine’s Day collection. This morning, Hallmark tweeted, “We are excited to announce our new Valentine’s Day collection. This year, we wanted to do something a little different. Groundbreaking. Innovative. Yes, we bring people together, but we can also drive them apart. Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Hallmark’s new Breakup collection!”

Most people have the same reaction when they can’t understand what somebody says. It is simple, elegant and concise — “What?” However, after the second, third or twentieth time of asking someone to repeat what they said, the conversation comes to an awkward halt. To avoid this issue, assumptions must be made about what people say. If your brain is anything like mine, these assumptions are often entirely incorrect.

From time to time, I’m the coolest person in the world. When I put on my favorite pair of $2 sunglasses — bam, I’m unstoppable. When I’m driving back from getting groceries, if I crack open the window and play music at the lowest possible volume — bam, everybody knows my name. When a gentle breeze lifts my hair — bam, my face is on billboards in Times Square — my hair is slapping me in the face – bam, my face is on a billboard ad for allergy pills.

What’s that quote about dreams again? “If you dream it, you can ... overanalyze it and learn that your mind is a scary place?”

Former Twitter User Donald Trump saw the light at the end of the tunnel an entire month after COVID-19 was declared a pandemic. Over a year later, reality may finally be catching up with him. As more and more people agree to be poked in the arm, “returning to normal” is feeling more cliché every day.

Most students remember their first time touring the brick pathways of the University. They carry fond memories of the guide acting like they practice walking backward in their free time and the parent who asked 34 questions about transfer credit. They have chronic nightmares about that moment of sheer terror when they had to come up with an interesting fact about themselves for an icebreaker. Although aspiring students cannot experience the same joyful moments in this day and age, University tours recently received several major upgrades.
